I give those students a lot of leeway because theyre hurting right now. That murderer turned their world upside down and theyll probably be traumatized for years to come, if not the rest of their lives. Theyre looking for someone they can shift their pain and anger to, and that means finding someone to blame and making a change. This is all probably therapeutic.

Its been remarkable seeing their strength and activism in the face of tragedy.

Its also been remarkable in the opposite way that the usual suspects (here and elsewhere) have wasted zero time calling them puppets or saying they dont give a shit about liberal kids sharing their opinions. Really sheds light on who they are.

yeah I mean I don't see how you can say it isn't politics while praising the kids for taking a political stand against Republicans

the issue I have with it isn't so much that they are pressing for change, or even the kids themselves. it is just kind of frustrating that it is the only way to change gun laws in this country. banning AR-15s or making them harder to purchase would not really help anything, but because we are tailoring our activism to a very narrow part of our gun problem, we are getting very narrowly tailored solutions as well

Generally speaking.

But lets remember

1. These kids are almost of age
2. They went through something major that at least temporarily alter your dynamics as a family

Id question your capabilities as a parent if your child surviving a school shooting doesnt have an effect on your political stances.

yeah, totally, thinking that sensationalized media coverage over a minute part of our gun problem leads to political solutions that make people feel good but don't solve gun violence is exactly what russian trollbots say

meanwhile, having well wishes towards kids is the same thing as actually doing something about gun violence

is this how people view political morality in 2018?

I think the victims are doing a good job of not letting other people speak for them like you see in some tragedies.

That being said, I don't think their political opinions are particularly relevant or insightful. They have fairly standard political beliefs for young adults.

I agree, I don't really blame them. But what I've seen of them (basically just one TV interview) doesn't help their cause, IMO. A couple of students, one was at least coherent but his statements weren't really logical or factual, and the other just screamed at the camera man. I mean now is a time you can probably get some support for stricter gun laws, but if you just scream how every NRA member or gun owner is a murderer you are going to turn a lot of people off quick.
