How was the girl robbed. The 15 year old outskated everyone. My Husband and I both thought the first Russian that skated was easily the best. She had more energy, her jumps were higher. The second Russian I was like "I think I liked the first girl better"

And if jumps were all that mattered that would be fine.... but sadly figure skating judges you on emotion and telling a story.... Im all for figure skating becoming snowboard pipe, where just tricks and landings matter, but until that happens Sailor Moon should have won today.

The 15 year old had emotion. She was totally happy and jumpy. Evegina looked like she was going to cry. As if she was in pain.

Her music was melancholy, and it seems like it started with a riot or shooting.

She was suppposed to be sad

By the way...

Did anyone think that someone ran onto the ice or a terrorist attack happened at the start?

And the 15 year olds music was happy and she was smiling. How is that not fitting.

Actually they scored the same in the long program, I just saw it broken down. Evengia had more artistic points and Alina had higher technical components.

The sole reason Alina won was the short program, since they tied in the long. Both won the long.

Smiling or frowning isnt all that goes to telling a story.

Sailor Moon was art fully weaving fabric of story in her skating with the music.

The teenagers story appeared to be, I can jump really high, land to the beat, and spin in the air, ALOT, during the final 2 minutes.

Which is totally MY kind of story, and if I ever get in charge of the olympics thats what figure skating would become.... but its not what they were trained on or told theyd be judged on in current international figure skating

I was rooting for the second Russian girl - I loved her passion - but I don't disagree with the overall results. The announcers really stressed that the younger Russian (winner) was the ONLY one in the competition who performed all her jumps during the second half of her routine, and she was given extra points for it because it's apparently that much tougher to attempt those jumps on tired legs.

Yeah, jumps performed during the second half give extra points. If you do all your jumps during the second half, you maximize your gains from these bonus points.

Russia did not look anywhere near as strong as I thought they were going to in that semi-final.
Who knows...another team may have a shot at Hockey after all.

Also, props to the USA men getting to the curling gold medal game today by beating the Canadians.

Canada set an all-time Winter Olympic record for medals yesterday, despite the chokes in Curling.

Between Curling and Hockey, those were essentially 4 guaranteed golds, and we might walk away with 0/4 golds and 2 or 3 medals and still break the record.

Oh man I can't describe my happiness after the Biathlon. Sweden VS Norway in a tight last duel shooting for the gold, and Norway chokes! This is our 6th Gold and we just need one more medal to make this pur best Olympic games ever.

And if our ladies can just keep hold this lead we will have two chances for gold in curling.

To bad that Norway is so much better than us overall tough. :p

Previews for the final 12 events and how it effects Norway/Germany gold and Canada/Germany total medals.

Alpine Skiing - Mixed Team Event
This is a new event at the Olympics, each nation uses two men and two women in each match against another nation in a parallel slalom race to the end. Each victory gives the nation a point, ties are broken by the fastest times of the fastest man and woman.

Based on the results of the individual event at these Olympics Austria, France, Sweden and Switzerland are the favourites to medal. However, Ive read that some of the top skiers werent really focussing on the team event so we could see some random results if some nations have to use their B team. With that said Norway has the best chance for a gold medal (they have a decent chance for any medal based on the bracket) while Germany would be favoured over Canada to win any medal. These are all unlikely, but a pick up here would be huge for any team.

Bobsleigh - 4-man bobsleigh
This will be a big event for Germany and Canada and could decide who has the most medals between the two nations on the final day. Germany owns three out of the top four places on the world rankings while Canada is ranked third and has a second sled ranked sixth.

The training sessions appears to favour Germany to win at least one medal and maybe even two. Canada has done well too. The pressure will be on for Canada to medal here or at the very least hope two other countries (Austria, Latvia, Russia, United States) beat out the German sleds to prevent Germany from gaining two or even three medals on Canada. It wouldnt be over for Canada, but they would have to convert most of their other chances.

For the battle of most golds Germany has to win this event. This is easily their best chance at winning gold among the remaining events and there is no way they are going to beat out Norway for most silvers. Norway doesnt have a sled, but they can hope someone can stop the Germans.

Cross-country skiing - Mens 50km and Womens 30km
The marathon of the Olympics. This sport will give Norway the best opportunity to win the most gold medals. Norway has a very good chance at winning both events and should they succeed it would be very hard for Germany to find three events to win gold in. As with the marathon nothing is certain in this kind of race.

Canadas Alex Harvey is the current world champion in the mens 50km and while he hasnt performed as well in his other events he could sneak a medal for Canada which will be helpful as Germany has no expectations for a medal here.

Curling - Mens team and Womens team
No teams remain for any of the three nations.

Ice Hockey - Mens team
Germany is guaranteed at least silver after their upset against Canada. The pressure will be on Canada to nullify that medal. It could prove decisive if Canada has a bad last two days. Gold, while unlikely would be a huge boost for Germany and would probably force Norway to win both cross-country events

Snowboarding - Mens Big Air, Mens Parallel Giant Slalom, Womens Parallel Giant Slalom
Three events still remain. Mens Big Air would be the event for Canada to put up big numbers as they could try to push for two medals. Norway also has someone in the final and could surprise.

Mens Parallel Giant Slalom is unlikely to award any medals to the three nations, Canada would technically be the favourite though Germany could sneak in as well.

Germany will be looking to counter Canadas result in Big Air with Womens Parallel Giant Slalom. Two medals arent entirely out of the question. A good result for Germany would be to have the same amount of medals in snowboarding as Canada by the end of the three events.

Speed Skating - Mens Mass Start and Womens Mass Start
No one should win the Mens Mass Start. At least Canada and Norway will have a skater in the race.

Both Canada and Germany have a chance in the Womens Mass Start. However, Canadas Blondin and Germanys Pechstein havent met expectations at this Olympics. Blondin has defeated Pechstein in the 3000m and 5000m already, can she make it three in a row?

Overall
I feel it would be quite the choke for Germany to fail to win gold in bobsleigh so that puts the onus on Norway to win one of the cross-country events. After that it will be hard for Germany to win a second gold medal though they will have chances and could very well surprise in something. Outside of cross-country Norway doesnt have too many options for gold medals outside of maybe alpine skiing.

The total medals fight between Canada and Germany will be interesting. On paper Germany has safer medals so they will have the advantage. Snowboarding tonight might decide it as could the bronze medal ice hockey match.

The South Korean just got into the finals by .01 seconds.
And Ester Ledeck is going for her second Gold of these games.

Oh and the stands are packed which is a nice change from what pretty much all of the games stands have looked like.

10. Austria - 5 - 3 - 6 - 14

South Korea picks up three medals while Switzerland win two golds. Based on the remaining events Norway pretty much needs to win gold in women's cross-country skiing or hope for Germany to choke in bobsleigh. Germany will finish second in total medals, their medal in ice hockey will push them over Canada meaning Canada would have to medal in bobsleigh and then hope none of the Germans win a medal which is very, very unlikely.

The question is what we could have possibly even done that could have topped it.

Short of literal women's figure skating I can't think of anything we could have done that would have been a bigger deal.

So comparing the totals predicted by GraceNote we can see which nations over or underperformed.

http://sportsdemo1.gracenote.com/documentation/vmt/

Overperformed (by more than two medals)
OA Russia (+9)
South Korea (+8)
Italy (+4)
Czech Republic (+3)
Great Britain (+3)

Since GraceNote used results from world cups/championships it isn't too hard to see why Russia and South Korea are the top two. Many of Russia's top athletes were left off the team due to doping allegations forcing the nation to send inexperience, but still good athletes to the game. Because they lack international experience the algorithm was unable to predict medals for them. Host nations also receive a boost which the algorithm does not take into account. What's interesting about South Korea's performance was none of them were won by judged events, all of them were won by whoever crossed the line first (though there is a big judging component in short track)

Underperformed (by more than two medals)
Germany (-8)
France (-6)
United States (-6)

While all three nations performed well they were also expected to finish a tier above where they were. While France could blame its poor performance in biathlon or the United States could blame their poor performance in speed skating in general none of the other sports really picked up the slack. The nations won very few surprising medals.
