MAL is actually completely worthless in regards to scores sand rankings and should be 100% completely disregarded om that front, and if you're getting into anime that's an important thing to remember.

Still a very useful site, but not for that.

I check MAL scores, but only because if something is ranked in the 6000s there's probably a reason and a sign I should at least look a bit deeper. I'm not going to let a ranking in the 3000s stop me from watching Strike Witches next, though!

Yeah I've found MAL scores at either extreme to provide information that's somewhat reliable. Like if something has above an 8.3 I usually think it's at least solid, whereas I think shows below 6.9 or so are generally not worth watching unless the show appeals to your specific niche for whatever reason.

Aggregate scores in general are pretty worthless, but MAL's are noticeably bad even by those standards. Popular shows of the season almost always soar to the top before sliding back down with rare exception.

I'll always value the opinions of individuals I know share similar tastes to me than "these 1000 people have decided this show is a 7.62 and this other show is a 7.67, which then seperates their ranking by over 100 shows." All it takes to realize how busted the system is is seeing that 25% of the top 20 are different Gintama shows and movies, and that's not even shade towards Gintama.

That said if something has a 4 then yeah there's probably a problem, but you should treat any aggregate score on that site between a 7 and a 9 as basically on equal footing.

But there's always going to be that case where a show with a 9.3 is still something you don't like.

I remember when Aku no Hana debuted and had one of the lowest MAL scores of all time. It ended up in the 7 range still I think

my score tends to reflect the MAL average so I guess it works for me

but at this point I can watch anime without looking at scores and totally understand why people love/hate it

Anything recent has absolutely no value being scored on there. Apocrypha and Kakegurui were two of the highest popularity shows on the site last year simply because people had to pirate them.

Apocrypha's exclusivity was revealed the day of airing. Hell, Last Encore's technically still isn't announced!

The scores, no, but it effects the rankings, too. People very much be more inclined to watch show ranked 50 versus one ranked 200 even if they have almost the same score.

The worst thing Netflix can do is snatch up a season of a show they don't have all the rights to. Crazy how you can watch all of Magi multiple places, but Sinbad is stuck with them.

Eh, IMDB only has four 9+ movies. It's just hard for stuff to get absurdly high scores on aggregate sites.

Regardless, scoring incomplete products makes no sense to me. It's why I stopped scoring my drops unless I'm like, super offended or something. I guess you can make a case for things like One Piece or Conan, but having an airing show scored the same way a finished show would be is silly.

If you understand that, then just take it into account when using the rankings. It's the same with reviews or whatever. They're much more useful if you know the context.

My only real qualm with MAL is that English titles should be given at least equal regard in the dropdown results while searching. It's hard to find stuff using the tiny images on mobile sometimes
