If you have, did it completely destroy your sense of independence?

The military! Will turn you into a killer machine at the price of your soul.

Yep I enlisted in the Air Force at 18 but during delayed enlistment I met my now wife and my entire life kinda changed in a lot of ways, so I weaseled my way out of it.

It isnt something Im proud of, I was honest with them though and told them why. They werent happy about it but in the end the recruitment officer told me he understood and wished me well. No way around it though, it does make me an oathbreaker.

Sometimes I do wonder what kind of person I would be if I had actually joined.

I never was in shape for the military.

Even if I was, I wasn't keen on something that would mean having to pull up stakes and move time and time again. My dad was in the Navy, and by the time I was 9, I had lived in 7 different places (including where I currently reside) - and I had more than enough of moving by then.

Yes I have

Was in the Marines for 8 years, 6 active 2 reserve. all contracts are 8 years technically so when my 4 year mark came up I said eff it and went on another deployment (Iraq 1st, Afghanistan 2nd) at the end because it was so much better than being in garrison and being treated like a dumbass kid by various commands. Then the last 2 years in the reserve so i could get school going. It worked well.

So anyway

If you have, did it completely destroy your sense of independence?

They take care of things for you for the most part, you just have to show up to work, depending on your job you might need to go to the gym a few times a week so you're ready for the inevitable fitness tests.

But in taking care of things, they don't treat you like an adult.

I knew one guy, he didn't transfer over to the real world. I went to his house once and he had like zero possessions outside of a nice PC gaming setup. no job, no food, it was pretty sad. I told him to go back in and he did, but there was a guy who obviously needed his hand held to make it through the day.

Then, there's the other 99% of guys i know who were in, they are all well-adjusted with decent careers and attractive wives/gfs/etc who are mostly winning in life.

As with all things ymmv.

Thought about enlisting in the reserve but decided not to, same with being a firefighter.

It just came down to my physical shape and work ethic.

in high school I almost signed up for the air force. I don't know why them, I just remember a military fair at the school and something about an air force brochure interested me. but I never ended up doing anything with it. and they wouldn't have taken me. I have too many physical and mental problems. I would have been rejected. my brother got rejected just for having raynaud's syndrome, which I too have

If anything it gave me more independence since I got out of the Army with savings, guaranteed income for 36 months, and school paid for.

I was in active for 8 years. Now I'm reserves and almost done with the first year. They really do treat everyone in like children. Which definitely won't help at all when you get out. It's nice not to really have to do anything on your own, though. Haha. But it can stunt independence for some.

Also, not a killing machine. Hahaha!!!

Why don't I support war mongering? Really? Ok so issue by issue:
1. We established our own country to get away from British imperialism, not to out do them at their own game. I respect the laws and borders of sovereign nations. We have no right to meddle in the affairs of others.

2. Drone strikes kill as many innocent civilians as they do terrorists. When you kill civilians, you only convince the survivors to support the terrorists instead of you.

3. I believe in the non aggression principle. Preemptively attacking other nations makes us the aggressor, which puts us in the wrong morally.

4. Stealing trillions of dollars that could have otherwise stayed in taxpayer's pockets is theft. Manufacturing weapons and perpetuating war for the sake of profit is pure evil.

Yeah, but they took a year to get back to me and I withdrew my application and moved. A few months later they called my house and my dad told them that and they were like "oh. Oops." The end.

I honestly wouldn't have made it anyway. Flat feet plus asthma. They'd have needed some desperate volkssturm program or something to consider me...
