When will I need to change how I travel domestically?

Starting January 22, 2018, passengers who have drivers licenses issued by a state that is not yet compliant with REAL ID and that has not received an extension will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel. Please see TSAs website for a list of acceptable forms of identification. Passengers who have licenses issued by a state that is compliant or that has an extension to become compliant with REAL ID requirements may continue to use their licenses as usual. For a list of states already in compliance or with an extension visit DHSs REAL ID webpage. DHS continually updates this list as more states come into compliance or obtain extensions.

Starting October 1, 2020, every air traveler will need to present a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification for domestic air travel. A REAL ID compliant license is one that meets, and is issued by a state that complies with, the REAL ID Acts security standards.

About half the states currently are compliant, and other half in extension for Real ID. So your current ID (e.g. driver's license) will still work for the next two years. But after October 2020, you will need a Real ID or passport for domestic air travel.

It depends on the state, here in Michigan it's not in effect until 2020.

Cool I legally can't go on airplanes until I learn how to drive or get a passport.

Not like I would ever go on an airplane but still.

Also how does this apply to minors?

This has been implemented in secure facilities (e.g. Military Bases or many facilities that work with the Military) for a while now. One of the reasons why I can't get a job as as a programmer for any defense contractor.

Oh, this is just an updated driver's license, it gets automatically rolled in when you renew it.

Yup, also apparently it only exists for states that didn't conform to the standards yet.

See the Michigan Secritary of State Office website:

You may notice Transportation Security Administration posters in airports displaying Jan. 22, 2018 as the date that all drivers licenses and state IDs must be REAL ID-compliant to be accepted as valid documentation when flying domestically. This is true, but it affects residents from states that have not conformed to the REAL ID federal standards for issuing drivers licenses and state ID cards. Michigan has met the federal standards, which means that even if your license or ID card is not currently REAL ID compliant, it will still be accepted at airports as valid until Oct. 1, 2020.

Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington are the only states that currently issue EDLs.

So if you don't live in one of those states and you're traveling by air domestically...you're fucked? EDIT: In 2020. Still.

I just got a new license a few months ago and apparently it's not an EDL.... That's fucking bull shit, I'm not paying for a new license by Oct 2020 when the one I just got is valid for five fucking years past that!
