This is one of the most insane Super Bowl runs I can think of. Has a backup QB ever won SB MVP? Or even won a Super Bowl at all?

Yeah... Tom Brady

Wasn't Bledsoe able to play by then though?

Lmao I'm stupid, but... wasn't he basically installed as the starter that season? I think that Bledsoe was left out of the lineup healthy at some point. And Bledsoe was getting old. So maybe a backup won SB MVP but it still isn't as crazy as this. Wentz was their young franchise QB who was having an MVP season, not an aging expendable guy like Bledsoe.

Kurt Warner would actually be a better example because Trent Green missed that whole season. But obviously he wasn't really that great either but Brady had officially assumed the starting job when he won. If Green had come back Warner certainly would have retained the job of course but still. Foles is the most backuppy backup to win

The talk around Boston is focused heavily on the decision to have Malcolm Butler suit up only to play one snap, and that came on a special teams play.

Big controversy given how poorly the Patriots defense, particularly the secondary, was performing.

People are wondering if Belichick held Butler back out of spite for whatever reason. A lot of the fans who thought that Wickersham article (about a rift in the Pats locker room) was bunk are now starting to wonder if it was true after all.

I never doubted it based on solely Wickershams history and pedigree as a journalist. Hes not the type of writer to make shit up and he always does his research.

I guess Brandon Browner commented on the locker room rift and DontA Hightower liked it or whatever, as well as a couple former Patriots, and people are pointing to that as evidence corroborating the article lol

They're ready to let him go thats why he didn't play. Like they've always done before with their players regardless of what they previously did. Patriots are always cold hard math. So just like in a videogame where you unlock the level 25 weapon, you throw away or sell your level 23 weapon and you rarely think twice afterward about it.

Bullshit. Butler was on 1st team practice squad all week, and he played a ridiculous amount of snaps during the regular season. Theyre more than likely going to release him, yes. But theres something else going on with the Butler situation.

Would Butler alone have fixed the defense and saved the day? Highly doubtful. But the way their secondary was getting carved up, the Patriots wouldve put him in with the half-time adjustments except for this mystery situation. I mean, this wasnt some meaningless regular season game. It was the Super Bowl.

Im not willing to cry conspiracy, but there has to be more to the Butler thing than cold hard math

Im not saying that we shouldn't feel bad for Butler. But a business cares about charts and graphs, not emotions. Im just going off their large sample size of players they've let go when they did. I hope any Patriots fans haven't gotten too chummy with Gronkowski....

also, never forget
If I were a Jets fan (or an AFC east fan) I would hate this guy forever

Belichick had two different stints as the head coach of the New York Jets without ever coaching a game.

In February 1997, Belichick, who had been an assistant coach under Bill Parcells with the New York Giants and New England Patriots, was named the Jets interim head coach while the Jets and Patriots continued to negotiate compensation to release Parcells from his contract with the Patriots and allow Parcells to coach the Jets.[27] Six days later, the Patriots and Jets reached an agreement that allowed Parcells to coach the Jets, and Belichick became the team's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.[28]

When Parcells stepped down as head coach in 1999, he had already arranged with team management to have Belichick succeed him. However, Belichick would be the New York Jets' head coach for only one day. When Belichick was introduced as head coach to the mediathe day after his hiring was publicizedhe turned it into a surprise-resignation announcement. Before taking the podium, he scrawled a resignation note on a sheet of loose leaf paper that read, in its entirety, "I resign as HC of the NYJ." He then delivered a half-hour speech explaining his resignation to the assembled press corps.[29]

Soon after this bizarre turn of events, he was introduced as the Patriots' 12th full-time head coach, succeeding the recently fired Pete Carroll. (The Patriots had tried to hire him away from Parcells/the Jets in the past.) Parcells and the Jets claimed that Belichick was still under contract to the Jets, and demanded compensation from the Patriots. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue agreed, and the Patriots gave the Jets a first-round draft pick in 2000 in exchange for the right to hire Belichick.[30]
