Having studies languages extensively myself, the answer is "it depends". English is extremely hard for people to learn if they come from a different language entirely (like Arabic, Russian or Chinese). If you speak a germanic language, German for instance learning English is actually really easy. The grammar is quite simple compared to German, however the hard part with English is the vocabulary. Most people don't understand how ridiculously vast an English dictionary is, by far the biggest vocabulary of any language. Going to English coming from Latin languages is also not too difficult. Germanic and Latin languages just happen to have a lot in common with English, grammatically and vocabulary wise.

To add to the vocabulary concern there are a LOT of grammatical exceptions to rules of grammar. Since a lot of the words come from other languages the actual sounds and way that the words flow can be startling compared to certain other languages. That's before you get into strong dialectic differences in pronunciation between 'the Queen's English' and 'dirty' American English.

It's actually a much more complicated language than many other popular ones, with so many contradictions to every rule.

It's not considered the most difficult but of course for a speaker of a language like Mandarin it will be harder than like Spanish or German.

Dunno, but you'll often hear Europeans crapping on American English.

Speaking of being closer to older language though, Spanish has a lot of words today that are direct carry overs from Latin. E.g. look at an ancient Roman map of Rome itself and you'll probably be able to read it if you understand Spanish.

Ive read that in a lot of parts of the world a good number of people are still taught British English. Seems like that shouldve changed a while ago. Sorry commonwealth countries.

Best thing about English imo is just that its always been a Wild West of vocabulary, which is awesome for descriptive writing purposes. Part of Shakespeares fame for example is derived from how many words he coined - some stuck around and some didnt.

I also like the concept of English purification (focusing on removing Latin and Greek and other foreign influences and focusing on Germanic influence): http://anglish.wikia.com/wiki/Main_leaf

So are Italian and French. But Spanish has more direct word carry overs.

To me the most confusing transition from letters to sound occurs with English spelling of Gaelic words. Even with well-known examples it can take a moment to process them. For example, baensidhe is more commonly seen as banshee.
