In terms of storytelling and graphics, sure. In terms of battle mechanism then it's easy as fuck and I dunno if people would consider that aging well or not.

the graphics, sound and story should hold up just fine. the battle mechanics may be a bit outdated, especially if you aren't used to turn-based RPGs.

Holds up easily. It helps that encounters are not random but rather on map contact or occasionally scripted hot spots.

Since it intentionally has cartoony graphics it looks fine. Only games trying from realism age badly graphically. Story is as good as ever, and the added content on the DS version closes up a few loopholes Chrono Cross created.

Mechanics-wise, it's super easy and ATB feels clunky. Probably would have been better as either full turn based or something like Secret Of Mana

I personally think so. The graphics and music are timelessly beautiful. The battles are not really anything special now, but were fairly well done at the time. The story is simple but effective. It doesn't take too long to get going but holds enough back to keep you interested.

It was ahead of its time (no pun intended :P) in some regards with no random battles and the way it handled multiple endings, time travel and other aspects. The lack of random battles goes both ways: you can control when a battle is triggered, but many enemies are placed in such a way that they can't be avoided.

I think so, yeah. For me a game hasn't aged well if it becomes tedious to play because of bad/clunky UI etc. In that sense, the top SNES RPGs are still great. Some of them still have complex enough mechanics as well, so that they're actually interesting to play. I just am not very partial to CT in general.

Interesting side note. CT and SoM branched off as separate games. Originally it was going to be one massive project. So in some alternate timeline we have a Square RPG that is a little bit of both.

CT has held up an incredibly well. A lot of the higher-quality SNES games have honestly aged great. They had mastered the 2D pixel art so things look pretty and because it's 2D, you aren't comparing it to modern 3D graphics, which is an issue some PS1/N64 games run into. The gameplay still holds up as well.

Chrono Trigger is incredible in every way.

Only real downsides to it are the difficulty can be a bit low (outside of some bosses), and the hit detection can make some of the more complicated maps annoying to navigate.

But it's a perfect blend of fantasy, sci-fi, and 90's anime aesthetic.

It was probably the beset 16 bit RPG of it's time, so it's worth a look.

There was a (slightly) upgraded version released digitally on PSN (The PS1 version, which has a few animated cut scenes) that's easy to get and has better quality audio.

It's aged better then Chrono Cross.

Of note, people saying it's easy actually mean there's less emphasis on grinding.

The grind is still there, it just isn't as predominate as it is in other titles. To many people grind = hard. Never got that myself. Nothing hard about running in circles for a few hours to farm XP.

I don't grind at all and I got stuck about halfway through. There's a boss that apparently your supposed to put him to sleep to beat him easier. I tried beating him straight up and got floored repeatedly.

It's not that it's hard, but that some people find just killing enemies over and over with little in the way of challenge to be monotonous and boring, so they just won't do it. If the games require grinding to keep pace with the story, you'll have people who still refuse to do any serious grinding and thus the game becomes hard.

It's less lack of a grind, and more that most enemies don't present a real sense of threat or danger. The early game can be difficult because of the sheer gauntlets you'll be running through, but by mid-game you'll have the resources to outlast anything.

And if you actually do grind enemies become completely irrelevant and a party wipe is impossible unless you actively let it happen.

Still, the battle and tech system is fun af and the enemies are strong enough to not feel like a complete waste of time.

There's a missable party member that requires pretty specific actions, so decide if you want to look that up.
