Spoilers I guess?

The fact that Jason isn't the killer wasn't really a twist at the time, but it's pretty surprising when you watch it for the first time after the franchise was already established.

I checked the TVtropes page, and while it does mention the irony of the situation, there isn't a trope named after it. Has anything similar ever happened before?

Sorry, I'm not talking about the twist itself. I'm talking about the situation created where it only really counts as being a twist to future audiences.

I was going to say Psycho too, but for the real question I can't really think of anything. It's like a reversal of when you know about something due to sequels. You expect that and then it's not that. That same situation happened with the person I saw Friday the 13th with, though.

He means that F13 #1 in no way tries to make you think it's Jason, but anyone unfamiliar with the specifics of that particular movie would assume it because Jason is what people know about those movies in general.

If you saw Friday the 13th in 1980, you would not be thinking that a grown Jason wearing a hockey mask wielding a machete would be revealed to be the murderer, so at the time it isn't a twist when that doesn't happen.

It in fact is sort of the opposite. That's just a spoiler they don't try to hide later on, like Darth Vader.

I think it's something like Kirby's Dream Land (GB, 1992) not having copy abilities, which is the character's defining trait from his later games.

But he's asking for plot-related things in movies or other stories. And in that respect I can't think of anything.

So basically, any long-running series that relied on recurring tropes or themes, but those themes were not present in the very first entry, so a person experiencing the series out of order would be "surprised" when the first one is unlike the rest of them.

It's kind of hard to say what might be expected by younger audiences, but maybe Hannibal Lecter not being the main antagonist of Silence of the Lambs?

If it's not at that point yet I think it definitely will be in like 10 years or so

I've never actually seen Silence of the Lambs and I was definitely under the impression that he was the antagonist, so yes this would count. I just thought Hannibal Lecter was Buffalo Bill's real name

Also while it's a little different from what I originally intended, I'm enjoying all of these gameplay related ones as well.

Dynasty Warriors 1 is a fighting game

That one is a sort-of technicality though; in Japan the first one is called Sangoku Musou and then Dynasty Warriors 2, 3, etc were Shin Sangoku Musou, Shin Sangoku Musou 2, etc so the rest of the series is like a spinoff to the original fighting game, in a different genre.

The subject matter of First Blood is quite different to the rest of the Rambo series and our general pop culture perception of it

I guess the fact that JoJo's parts 1 and 2 don't have stands might count

Psycho does still fit the question, though not in the way most people replied. I've watched Psycho with so many people who all knew of the shower scene, but didn't know any context to the movie. And every single person was surprised that the shower scene kill took place halfway into the movie. They were all like "Wait what? Is the movie already over? Is she still alive? She's the main character." Psycho is a unique case where that twist worked back in its day for how it was meant, and still today for people who even know about the scene because they just don't know the context, so it gets them again!

Reading through the film examples reminded me that the original Evil Dead is a much more serious, straight horror film than I expected, based on what I knew about Evil Dead 2, and having already seen Army of Darkness. But yeah I think Friday the 13th is the most prominent example of this, and certainly where concerning character origins.
