I think that distances are too far between stars. Most extraterrestrials are confined to their home planetary systems unless they've figured out a way to break the light speed barrier - the ultimate speed limit. As for whether Earth has been visited by aliens? Personally I doubt it.

I think it's likely there is life out there somewhere given the sheer size of the universe. I have doubts that they have come to Earth or that we will encounter them in our lifetimes.

I have seen zero evidence and I don't think there is any credible evidence so far. It's also probably that life evolved somewhere else, I just don't think we've experienced anything like that yet.

Pretty much this.

Odds that we are the only intelligence in the universe? Fuck that, so arrogant. We are not.

Odds that we will discover or be discovered by other intelligent life in the universe anytime soon? lol wtf.

Considering these sorts of sightings basically started happening and being recorded alongside aviation, and that there are a ton of countries we have zero intel on, it's not really impossible to imagine that it could be another country's aircraft.

I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying it's wrong to just assume it's extraterrestrials.

I'd agree it would be wrong to assume that

I also think it's wrong to dismiss it completely, as you did, with no evidence/zero credibility like you said

I'm simply saying you shouldn't dismiss it, one way or the other

On a side note it really is hard to believe any country could do this. A handful, tops

Earth is evidence that there is at least a 1/SizeofSpace chance of life.
Plants and animals are of course more likely than intelligent; Earth doesn't even have that.

As for ETs visiting Earth? Probably not because they're too far away, but then again; over a time span of 4 billion years anything can happen once or twice. Again; probably not a lot though, just once or twice; probably not within the 200k years we've been around.

I didn't dismiss UFOs, I dismissed claims that UFOs are extraterrestrial based on zero evidence. I also made it clear that statistically speaking, it is pretty likely that life evolved somewhere else, so it's a bit weird you claim I'm outright dismissing the possibility.

I feel like there absolutely is life out there and on the off chance there isn't it's because we're either the first or last in what will be/has been a long line of civilizations.

Only other explanation for me would be that what we perceive as the universe is somehow just a fabricated existence but if that's the case then some intelligent being has to be overseeing it anyway, though I guess they could be the real humans and we're just fake ones.

Don't enjoy not knowing either way, so I try not to think about it too much.

that's not necessarily true.

"normal" ftl travel, once broken (if it can be), is a complete unknown. it could be quite easy to ramp up speed.

and the most known possible work-around, wormhole travel, there's no real reason distance should be a factor at all.

the best reason it would take them time to get here is if we're just that far down their list, lol.

Wormhole travel sounds incredibly fatal. But light itself still takes ages to reach our view in the sky, a lot of stars we see at night don't really exist anymore.

Certainly possible, but its something we are only starting to understand. But i dont know why youre citing the speed of light when talking about ftl. We have few ideas on how to go c, none more than theory. So i dont think theres any idea how much harder it is to go 2c than c, 10 c than 2c, or 10000c than 10c.

You can't break c because anything with mass needs infinite energy to reach c, which is not possible.

Wormholes are barely theoretical outside sci-fi.

It would take 2 million years at c to reach our sister galaxy. Any life that can ever visit us would have to be in the 100-400 billion stars in our galaxy, which span 100k-180k lightyears.

Is there intelligent life out there? Maybe somewhere, but probably not within the observable universe.

Has intelligent alien life ever visited Earth? Almost definitely not.

I doubt we'll ever encounter an intelligent organic extraterrestrial, because of the truly massive distances between stars in space. Just putting a human on Mars is a monumental task due to the time it takes, a year in microgravity fucks up the human body, without even considering the food, water, and oxygen supply issues. We're far more likely to encounter some kind of extraterrestrial robots instead, but even that is unlikely because of the massive distances involved and the fact that our star is relatively unremarkable, there would be no good reason for an extraterrestrial species to send them to Earth unless they live at Alpha Centauri or they're doing some kind of thorough galactic survey

for a civilization that's existed for 10-100 thousand years. other civs can easily be several orders of magnitude older than that.

as you say, space is massive. but time in this discussion can be just as massive.
