I'm a big advocate for watching it yourself the first time because for all you know you might end up loving most of it but with the "skip it" advice you might either never watch it at all or be retroactively spoiled by later episodes (in the sense of writing, pacing, characterization etc) that not being able to enjoy it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Either way, despite being dryer and sometimes rough in places, I don't think it was bad anyway, certainly not the whole season. Plus there's some continuity there like meeting Q for the first time.
