Magnum, Simon & Simon, and Matlock were mine. My parents always had them on TV... I voted for Magnum...

Tempted to say Miss Marple, but it really didn't have that many episodes. I think I'm going to go with Murder, She Wrote although the quality declined after the early years and I hated some of the casting changes. That said, it was great seeing John Astin (Gomez Addams) in a recurring role, especially since his final appearance was an episode where he turns out to be the murderer. It was a wicked swerve *because* he had been in so many episodes before that, unlike so many detective shows where the most recognizable name usually turns out to be the killer

Worth noting that the first season of ITV's Poirot -- starring the absolutely superb David Suchet -- began in 1989 with 10 episodes showing in that year.

Columbo

While Columbo is by far one of the all-time greats, it wasn't really an 80s detective show. The original run was in the 70s and only a few episodes -- which occurred after a decade-long hiatus -- released in the 80s.

But yeah, if I was going to name my all-time favorite tv detective series, it'd likely be either Columbo or Poirot.

Including that it didn't start until 1990.

The best/most cringy thing was that Murder, She Wrote where Jessica Fletcher got drunk at that club (or party?), dancing around...

The show was big on cringy moments designed to show that Jessica was hip for her age which, while I'm sure looked silly then, look absolutely awful today.

Yeah, if I want to stop my mom in her tracks, I just say "remember when Jessica Fletcher was dancing around drunk?" and it always derails whatever she was saying.

tbh, I'm not sure anybody else in my family ever watched the show and I only got into it years after the fact when I had finished the two Marple shows and wanted something new to binge.

I don't think I can pick a favorite. I watched a bunch of them:
Magnum P.I.
Matt Houston
Simon and Simon
Hardcastle and McCormick
The Fall Guy
Murder, She Wrote
Knight Rider
Sledgehammer
and probably a few more that slipped my mind.

I, I think those all fall under this.

When my TV provider was Shaw, for some of the Matlock episode summaries in the guide it just said "Grandpa Simpson's favourite series".

I've never watched these, but had to vote Miami Vice because of Don Johnson, whose "Nash Bridges" was one of my favorite 90's shows.

Quincy M.E.

Though it went until 1983, I would say Quincy is more of a 70s show...all of its tropes seem to be planted in the mid-70s, which makes sense since it debuted in 1976. BUT, I suppose it is still valid since it ran into the 80s.

For me, will always love Miami Vice. Cagney and Lacey was good too.

Haven't seen anyone list The Equalizer yet.

Magnum PI was good but it jumped the shark in the later seasons.

I use those marvelous services to watch shows from my childhood or after. Rarely do I watch shows from before my time. Nick at night introduced me to a lot of the older shows, Brady bunch and gilligans island and the such.

Really cant think of one show besides MASH that I have gone out of my way to watch

I thought about including MacGyver, but it wasn't really a detective show... It was more in line with the A-Team or something.

I only vaguely remember watching these shows in the '80s, and most of my enjoyment from them would come in the '90s.

I've always found it silly that people wouldn't watch something just because it's before their time. And, if you've never gone out of your way to watch the Twilight Zone, I'd just find that tragic. What are they even teaching kids in schools nowadays? Math?

I dont go out of my way to not watch things that are before my time, I just cant say I have been interested in much of them.

But youre right, twilight zone was amazing and I have seen most of the old episodes
