it seems like he's become even more of an insufferable fuck since the baby was born, ok?

we can't spend as much time with him, so he's been spraying different parts of the apartment. we'll just finish getting the baby to sleep and he'll knock over random shit, or start meowing really loudly, and wake her up. no matter what, he has to be close to us, and he tends to want to lay on the baby because she's warm and the center of our attention. he almost did it once while we were making dinner, and we wanted to strangle him. he gets up SUPER early demanding food, and won't shut up until it happens.

i'm a few more of these incidents away from sending this cat to a shelter, which is already overpopulated, and where he'll inevitably be put down.

he used to be a good cat, but the years have made him a fucking prick, ok?

Sorry to hear that. Our cat was really good with our kids, she even attacked the door one time when she sensed his breathing was off and sure enough our oldest was having difficulty breathing. She still will hang out in one of our kids rooms if they get sick.

The fact that you see it as an either or just proves that you are an ass. Your cat is spraying because you are neglecting it. If you can't handle having both a kid and a cat at the same time, you shouldn't have either. It's really not that hard to be caring and loving to two living beings. Unless you are an ass

maybe you're right. i could probably do that, if things get bad enough, ok?

it's just frustrating when you deal with a baby (especially with the long colic outbursts) for literal hours sometimes, finally get her relaxed and happy, and the cat starts in with some bullshit, like spraying on the couch or waking her up when you're already so tired.

i doubt we'd actually send him to be killed, but at the same time, i don't think he can stay with us much longer, ok?

Is the cat very old? Once a male cat reaches maturity they spray unless neutered and then sometimes even after. That could have something to do with his meowing all the time too.

Personally I never had an indoor pet around my kids. I just don't trust animals that much.

you act like house pets have it in them to maliciously injure someone for no reason. if a cat or dog injures someone it's because of a perceived threat or discomfort.

i'm not acting like that at all though, i know why animals act the way they do

but if they did attack him, they would be doing it on purpose. i'd understand if he hit them or yanked on their tails or something. that's an important lesson not to do that sort of thing. i'm talking about if he didn't do anything to provoke the animal. like he's just sitting there playing with his toys or something and the cat just comes up and starts beating the shit out of him.

you said "on purpose" in the context of it being malicious. animals don't just lash out unless they feel threatened. that's not really "on purpose" it's survival instinct.

Your cat is probably an ass because you're a terrible pet owner. He probably resents being adopted by you. Maybe look in the mirror and figure out what you could do differently, instead of just immediately jumping to 'I'm gonna murder this cat because it's inconvenient for me to be a responsible and loving pet owner". Ok?

i can't help that my cat or dog feels threatened by my kid simply existing, and if it feels threatened enough to attack him, then it'll be very hard to get it to feel unthreatened by him

yes, obviously you aren't. but why not try to rehome the pet or find a no kill shelter? ziggi is saying he wants to bring it to a shelter but knows it'll probably just get put down. just say cat not good with kids and try to find an elderly person who wants it or something.

This is a pretty intense topic.

well it's a hot button issue. the sad thing is a lot of times you won't know your pet isn't compatible with children until you have a baby.

the thing is they could try to give the cat more time to get along with the baby and get adjusted. it's a big adjustment for your pets just like it is for you.

you should never give your pet to a kill shelter just because they aren't getting along with your kids. pets are not disposable commodities. they're living, breathing creatures.

Cats get upset with change. You already didn't like your cat, now there's a baby getting attention and everything is different. Yes cats are going to act out and feel stressed with a big change even when they're treated well but I don't know that's the case here.

A friend had her baby almost 2 years ago and one of her cats peed on everything for a few months and then settled down. Cat loves the child now. Cat was just really stressed with the total change in routine and schedule. Urinating and increasing their scent is self soothing in the chaos (if it's not a medical issue).

Cats sitting on or near babies is fine. Unless you believe the old wives tales about cats stealing baby's breath. Which you shouldn't.

Don't ignore your cat, treat it well, give it time.
