I don't own Chrono Trigger. The SNES and PS1 versions never released here, and while we did get the DS version in PAL regions, it is far from common. I still haven't seen a copy.

Right now, the PS1 release is part of the PSN sales. Trying to decide if I should leach off a friend to get the digital copy (spent my sale funds to make the most of a discount code that had to be used by the 25th), or if I should keep looking for the DS copy.

SNES > DS > PS1

PS1 has added cutscenes, but old school RPGs are NOT compatible with loading times.

Sadly SNES is out unless Square start releasing their RPGs on the 3DS eShop.

So at this point, I need to decide if the limitations of the PS1 release are worth the fact that it is currently cheap and significantly easier to get than the DS game.

Unless someone here has a DS copy they would sell me. :P

Played the DS version, which was fine although it's been so long since I played the SNES version that I can't really compare the two.

I avoided the ps1 since it supposedly had a lot of load screens, but I'm not sure how much that carries over on PSN. And, because I'd rather play it on a handheld anyway, I can't imagine ever bothering with that version.

DS has everything the PS1 version has (cut scenes) but without the crappy load times.

I think it had a few extra areas, too, but I'm not sure. If you don't mind the load times it's fine on ps1, but there's a big lag when going to different eras and when starting battles.

The PSN sounds like the realistic option to play. The PS1 is where I first played Chrono Trigger and I dealt with loading and loved the game.

I'l sure you'll manage just fine.

Indeed. Though I'd still prefer the DS copy. Finding that one is the problem.

The biggest problem with PSN is possible load times, and needing to leach until I have the cash in just over a week. :P

Imo thats how it is at least

DS has the cut scenes and the bonus dungeon
SNES no load times
PS1 load times were terrible
Phone has terrible controls, makes the game almost unplayable. I find moblile controls work better on a tile based rpg then a free roam

I don't own a SNES. And probably most, if not all, are bootlegs (several are advertising a PAL version that never existed).

I also don't want to buy the DS game online unless I'm sure what I'm buying is an original, rather than a bootleg (since those won't work on my 3DS).

Between just the two versions I'd say the GBA version for the load times. Sure, the translation might be different in a few parts, even taking away from one of Magus's lines at one point, compared to the SNES version, but the GBA version proves more playable than the PS when you aren't waiting an unnecessary amount of time for the battles to begin, for example.

Sorry I'm not selling but I was looking at prices and most on ebay seem to be $40 USD + 4 shipping. Not sure how much that'd be for you. I think it's roughly 60 for you.

Right, the PSN is basically a port of the PS version that was included in Final Fantasy Chronicles. And it sucks. The loading times are unforgivable. Literally freezes for a few seconds every time you enter the menu screen,

As pretty much stated, SNES > all others > PSX.

The problems with the PSX are the AWFUL load times. That being said, if you are getting a digital copy, the load times might be slower. Still worse than SNES, though.

DS > SNES > PS1

Unless you're a purist, the DS version is better. The bestiary alone makes it better, plus all the other extras. The PS1 version was just awful, just like all the other PS1 versions of 2D Squaresoft RPGs.

Oh, the DS version went up in price? I swear it was $20 a few months ago.

Anyway, I've played all of the versions, and while the SNES version is the best, the DS one is essentially equal to it. Just a hair worse, and it's because I prefer the menus and interface of the original, with having everything on one screen instead of two.

But, since price is an issue, go with PS1 on the PSN. The loading isn't gonna be a problem if you haven't played the other versions already.

Unless it gets even higher, the price isn't a turn off, the difficulty finding the actual DS cart is the problem. I haven't bought it online since I know some sellers will just do a single game flash cart and sell it as whatever title. That is a worry more than the price.

You could always get it off the Wii if it's offered on your system's eShop. I got my copy for ten of my American dollars.

Although, you may want to do it before late March, because you won't be able to add any more points to your account after the 26th of that month.

I'm not sure if Chrono Trigger is an option here (can't check at this time), but the Wii eShop never do any sales, and tends to be expensive. I'd be spending NZ$18 (more than twice the price of the PS1 version) for a SNES game.

But if you can't return for a refund in case of a fake, don't risk it. Better safe than sorry. Had that with a store here, fakes aren't an acceptable reason for a refund. >:(
