Foster, who recently directed the Arkangel episode in the fourth season of Black Mirror, told the Radio Times (via DailyMail) and did not hold back when talking about movies of the Marvel and DC variety saying, Going to the movies has become like a theme park.

She added, Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth. Then in a final jab she said, Its ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world.

The actress-turned-director made it clear that she does not want to make $200 million movies about superheroes and that CGI and that sort of spectacle is not the reason why she makes movies. I feel like I make movies because there are things I have to say in order to figure out who I am or my place in the world, or for me to evolve as a person.

Ruining the viewing habits of the population?
*Pretentious Meter Maxed*

Lowest common denominator programming has always been a thing, and popular to boot. Sure, you can sit around sipping wine and watching foreign films and decrying pop culture as toxic waste from philistines, but don't expect the rest of the world to even bother to shrug.

I stopped watching superhero movies after Batman. It's all the same cliche shit and nothing new.

Movies are mostly a waste of time; TV shows where it at.

I don't think she meant in a literal sense, at least that how I read it.

I read it as superhero movies (which could be any genre of movie that's just around to turn out profit) are damaging the movie-going environment like fracking is damaging the planet. It could be an irreversible setback.

I also love a lot of superhero movies, but I think her point is also that studios seem to value absurdly high profits over a combination of profits + good storytelling.
Despite her astute point, it's also naive to think studios will do anything but produce films that make a profit. I may not care for the way superhero movies portray the characters I grew up reading, but I also don't expect Marvel to stop making movies if they are making massive profits.

I agree with her point. But I laugh at her expecting anything less than more and more superhero movies for as long as they profit Marvel/Disney.

it is silly to pin anything on super hero movies or even mass marketed profit-seeking crap -- it has always been around.

I would argue that even things like the Sound of Music or Gone With the Wind are not superior to super hero movies in terms of artistic merit -- if anything, if we aren't judging by the standards of the time, they are both inferior to modern movies and show obvious rough edges that subsequent generations of films have improved

I agree.

I just wish the major studios would figure out how to produce more good storytelling + profits. I think, in part, it relies on the marketing efforts too.
It also relies on the viewers' demands. Yeah sure it's easier to throw together Deadpool (my son just watch it this weekend, as I couldn't sit through more than five minutes at a time) with lines like "shit speckled muppet fart" than it is to come up with intelligent dialogue. But if the easy stuff is in demand, despite it's quality, then it's never going to stop. Much like McDonald's.

She's right, though.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view2=worldwide&yr=2017

TL;DR - Dunkirk is the only live-action film in the top 25 worldwide box office of 2017 to be originalnot an adaptation, remake or sequel.

How does this relate to superhero movies? Just keep rehashing the same old material. Give it a sequel, another sequel, a prequel, then a reboot, then introduce another side character and repeat again ad infinitum.

Superhero movies have taken over the box office. Outside of indie hipster theatres, Going to the cinemas these days is an exercise in choosing whether you want to see a marvel movie or a disney one.

Nothing is holding back studios from making original movies other than themselves. There's an audience for everything. All big blockbuster movies aren't meant to be Silence of the Lambs or the like. Seems like an unnecessary opinion.

I did like her Black Mirror episode. Crocodile showed it up though.

So... what better? You do realize without these recent blockbusters that most of the remaining movie chains would have folded by now. They are barely hanging on as is. If TLJ did any worse, movie chains would have been really bad off.

Even going by the most basic opinion someone could have that ain't true. Of the top 50 here only 3 are superhero movies.

http://www.imdb.com/list/ls003501243/

Look how many great movies on that list, and that's just the last 7 years.

By and large - excepting a few standout entries - superhero movies are like the background noise on mainstream radio. Most people find it enjoyable but few really love them by and large.
