I think the superhero movies reflect how people want to make lots of money and them not wanting their personal mark on history made or using their skills and imagination to build a permanent culture through natural beauty. If you look at older movies there was a beauty to them.

I mean I get what she's saying but... it really kinda comes off as "old people complaining about the new things kids are into." Kinda like how people who complain about moe anime taking over anime now, even though there's posts about people complaining about that back in the late 1990s and even 1980s. Hollywood trying to milk the cow of the current popular thing is as old as complaining about it.

I don't think she meant in a literal sense, at least that how I read it.

I read it as superhero movies (which could be any genre of movie that's just around to turn out profit) are damaging the movie-going environment like fracking is damaging the planet. It could be an irreversible setback.

I also love a lot of superhero movies, but I think her point is also that studios seem to value absurdly high profits over a combination of profits + good storytelling.

Despite her astute point, it's also naive to think studios will do anything but produce films that make a profit. I may not care for the way superhero movies portray the characters I grew up reading, but I also don't expect Marvel to stop making movies if they are making massive profits.

I just wish the major studios would figure out how to produce more good storytelling + profits. I think, in part, it relies on the marketing efforts too.

It also relies on the viewers' demands. Yeah sure it's easier to throw together Deadpool (my son just watch it this weekend, as I couldn't sit through more than five minutes at a time) with lines like "shit speckled muppet fart" than it is to come up with intelligent dialogue. But if the easy stuff is in demand, despite it's quality, then it's never going to stop. Much like McDonald's.

How old is your son? If he's just a babby, you should not have let him watch deadpool.

Also, deadpool is one of the few superhero movies grounded in a real story, regardless of how you feel about hookers.

Comic readers like me who spent their childhoods being enthralled by the characters, the stories, the action figures and the cartoons could only dream of seeing a X-Men or Spider-Man movie. I remember, as a kid, the mere prospect of seeing The Hulk on the big screen excited me, but I always contemplated on why it took so long (I mean, now I do as an adult. Hollywood's faith in comic franchises, CGI not advanced enough, etc.)

The massive explosion of Marvel, DC, Darkhorse and many other comic films have been truly wonderful. Many kids like me have waited so long for this smorgasbord of big screen adaptations that, quite frankly, could be another 50 years worth of films and I would still not get tired. Will the bubble pop? Of course it will. Everything comes and goes, but I've been super grateful to the film makers who took a big risk and got the ball rolling.

If you don't like them, then don't watch them, but don't be pitiful and scoff at all the money they generate. Whenever I read an interview with some celebrity who snorts while stating they cannot understand the fascination with these movies and lament on why the thing they like doesn't make revenue, my eyes never fail to roll.

Movies are meant to entertain. They can also make you think, but don't look down on the majority who prefer the former. A lot of us have issues in our lives to deal with and most of the time, we want to shut off our brains and escape for a few hours.

Frankly, I prefer that then trying to comprehend a filmmakers view on society, politics or whatever thing I don't give a fuck about.
