Board 8 > how bad is Resident Evil 6?

If you already like the series, it's a tolerable entry. It's an unfocused mishmash of contemporary trends and ideas mixed with lame attempts at keeping the last remnants horror it has. I think it has good shooting mechanics once you start using all your moves, but many segments are plagued by bad camera issues and tedious QTEs. Across it's 4 campaigns, you'll find the game either hard-pressed to keep its attention on a single idea, atmosphere, or theme, or stretch something out for so long you'll be in tears waiting for it to end. Still, it has some satisfying story elements in that that expand the canon in satisfying ways if you're into that and there's some fun to be had for sure in the pure third-person shooting mechanics.

I thought 5 was enjoyable enough to beat multiple times (though that could have been my first case of Achievement Fever, as I was obsessed with them when I finally got a 360 in 2009). I couldn't even finish the demo of RE6.

Yowza, I'm definitely on the other side of this consensus. 5 is a painfully mediocre game IMO, but 6 is an absolute blast. If you're looking for something that keeps true to the horror aspects of the series, you're in for a disappointment - but if you're willing to accept the game for what it is, it's a hilariously fun action game, especially with a co-op partner. Haven't played, but I've heard it's a game that gets much better once you start using the full range of your shooting mechanics. Also that these mechanics are never explained in the context of the game itself

Yeah, if you liked 5, you should be alright with 6. If you can play it co-op, I'd recommend it. Definitely made the game more enjoyable for me. Also, I think Ada's campaign is now available from the start, but I'd recommend playing it last anyway, like it was intended.

I can actually see if you played RE5 to death the mechanics would be lacking. And I think the melee system just isn't as fun as invincible animation frames that are integral to 5 and 4's gameplay loops.

But for someone who didn't S rank every mission on Professional 6 is still a blast of action adventure.

It's an above average action game but a subpar Resident Evil game. I enjoyed it for the most part but didn't really have the desire to replay it like I did previous entries in the series. Also, my 360 died shortly after I played it so maybe I would have replayed it more had it been an option

As pj mentioned, the set pieces are pretty cool. And as a couple others have mentioned, playing co-op makes it much more enjoyable. I think your overall perception of the game, once you've finished it, really depends on your expectations going in

He's a bit more serious here than he was in RE4, more like a building on from his personality in Degeneration. Still, he has his action hero moments in the game.

Ulti likes to do hyperbolic .5 reviews for stuff that he thinks screwed up a series he likes.

The weird outlier of his .5s is Shadow of the Colossus for some reason. Dunno why that one got under his skin so much.

It is not a 0.5 but it is easily the worst game in the mainline series if you don't count Resident Evil 0 as a mainline entry.

It is the DMC2 of the RE series but not quite as bad as DMC2.

His reviews aren't very well written at all IMO. Obviously it's a good idea to have your review include opinions because that's what a review is based off of, but Ulti has basically no subjectivity in it. His writing is entirely based off of his opinions being incredibly strong, with aspects of a game usually being fantastic, 100% mediocre, or complete garbage. There IS a gray area for him but it's only one shade really.

I think Ulti does try to be a good reviewer but in the end he's very unaware of how extreme his language is and how much credibility he loses because of it. He always sounds like either a very very happy fanboy or a very very upset fanboy.

On the note of RE6, I haven't played it myself but I figure it's decent. Nothing really awful and certainly nothing great. That's just the consensus that I've gotten.

Ulti has always been like this in the way he expresses things, that extreme passion one way or another is what duped a lot of users into thinking what he was saying was worthwhile. Then we got older and learned complexity and shades of grey are better than overly passionate lack of nuance.

I just made a rough graph of Ulti's review scores. It doesn't seem to be 100% accurate because I think I'm a review short on the total count, but it's pretty close.

The results should speak for themselves. Obviously it doesn't surprise me that there's far more positive reviews than negative, but on the negative half, 1s and 2s take it, and on the positive half, 9s and definitely 10s take it. There's an obvious separation at the 5-6 score mark because Ulti doesn't speak in moderate terms very often.

I even took the time to read a couple of the reviews that I hadn't already seen, and they're just kinda ridiculous. Lots of strong opinions, references to his other ridiculous scores as if they were factual statements, references to weird pop culture things that I don't think really happened (I saw something about a LeBron self destruct in there, and obviously LeBron James is doing just fine right now)... point is, I wouldn't necessarily trust Ulti reviews lol. Not everything he says is bullshit, but there's a good chance that it'll be really exaggerated or heavily against the majority opinion - or both.

So when he says RE6 is unplayable, I think he's probably wrong. Again, I haven't played it, but I assume it's "not good" at worst.

I really enjoyed it but I'm easy to please when it comes to games. My only two problems with it were 1. the camera which I think got patched, and 2. one snowy section where it was impossible to see anything. I don't know if that got patched, and it could have also just been my TV or brightness settings.
