Now who wins?

This has pretty much been another mid-tier season... Hope 36 is a golden one.

Yeah, I'd say mid-tier is about right. Some ups and downs, but a lot of averageness and an oversaturation of advantages. It's better than Game Changers, at least, but can't hold a candle to MvX.

Turns out 2017 is the worst year of Survivor/BB since 2011. That said, the HHH finale is supposed to be something really special, so let's hope it is and it doesn't end up being horrific like Kaoh Rong's (which SHOULD have been a thriller).

Dark Ages also includes Nicaragua >_>

And that ranking sucks. Mine is:
Cambodia > Cagayan > Millennials vs. Gen X > Blood vs. Water > SJDS > HHH >>>>>>>>>> Game Changers > Kaoh Rong > Worlds Apart

I think I'm the only person here who didn't like Kaoh Rong...

Nicaragua was the last "pure" season. Then we got 5/6 seasons of newbies vs. veterans in a row, 4 of which are widely regarded as terrible.

Also, Kaoh Rong was amazing. Great cast, villains to hate, heroes to root for, unpredictable, and because of the medevacs, we got a bunch of character scenes rather than obnoxious strategy talk.

Eras of Survivor:
Old School: 1-12. A much simpler time with less strategy and more loyalty to alliances. Cause of transition: Hidden Immunity Idols
Middle Ages: 13-20. Constantly evolving game with increasingly intense blindsides. Loyalty to 1-2 people was typical. Cause of transition: HvV = the Fall of Rome.
Dark Ages: 21-26. Too many "mactor" types. Poor gameplay. Three Pagongings and two additional bad seasons. Only Philippines is any good. Cause of transition: Malcolm Freberg.
Big Movez Era: 27-34. Dictated by players making crazy moves to shift the game. No loyalty to anyone. Some moves were reckless. Cause of transition: Era founders Ciera, Tony, and Malcolm leaving in the first four episodes of Game Changers.
Gimmicks Era: 35-present: Too much production influence to artificially create drama with twists as opposed to letting players play. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Nicaragua was still a "bad" season, too. By your logic, One World would also be a "pure" season - and it's a better one than Nicaragua, even if only slightly.

Also, Kaoh Rong was amazing. Great cast, villains to hate, heroes to root for, unpredictable, and because of the medevacs, we got a bunch of character scenes rather than obnoxious strategy talk.

The ending ruined it for me so so much. Three MedEvacs also was no fun. I want to see people making moves and playing the game, not people being pulled undeservingly. BMC was pulled due to production negligence. Joe would not have been pulled in the early seasons, when the medics would have just taken care of the problem. Back in the day, MedEvacs were always in situations where the individual needed to go to a hospital.

I know I'm in the minority here, but the horrific finale - including both the stupid "Vote out a juror" twist and the winner - just destroyed it for me after the MedEvacs already made me leery. I like the character scenes as a counterbalance to the mile-a-minute strategy, but not if it's anticlimactically pulling people from the game. It's just an enjoyment thing. When I look back at Kaoh Rong, I see it as a season where the petty villains got their way in the end and the heroine lost. I just don't enjoy things the same way you all do, I guess.

I pretty much agree with most of this except I would split that first category into 1-9 and 10-12 and call 1-9 the "Golden Age." That was about the time period where it was still a major cultural phenomenon and most of the seasons in that group are still considered by both hardcore and casual fans to be among the best in the show's run. Additionally, 10-12 was where we started to see the first inklings of the twists that would become today's norm.

At least from my perspective, there seemed to be a steep drop off in popularity after Vanuatu, and then again at the beginning of Cook Islands (largely owed to the racial division of that season) that it never fully recovered from. There was a small surge at Heroes vs. Villains but then it went back down to the point where today when I tell people that my favorite show is Survivor, many of them are surprised to learn that it's even still on.

Also wut at that bolded statement, this has been going on since HvV, and has been in absolute full force since Worlds Apart.

Pearl Islands will always be a Top 3 season for me regardless. It's hard to say where this season ends up landing because it's at where it'll depend on who wins.

That said though, when ranking seasons, I'll always call Guatemala and SJDS criminally underrated. And I'll think that SJDS is better than Cagayan for feeling like a better put together ever evolving/building story, compared to Cagayan just being "a bunch of stuff that happened".

SJDS is such an amazing season. Even the pre-merge, looking back...the only BAD section of the season is that middle from episodes 5-7. And even then, it's more 6/7 than anything.

Hunahpu is a god-tier tribe. The fact that it has Keith Nale, Jeremy Collins, Natalie Anderson, and Kelley Wentworth ALONE is great, but then you throw in glorious trainwreck Drew Christy, oblivious Disney Prince Jon Misch, and the Evil Stepmother in Missy Griffiths-Payne and... yeah, that's one of the greatest tribes in history that did the light-blue color quite proud. Reed Kelly also adds something. Quits McGee does not.

So what is the greatest light-blue tribe in history? Kucha, Drake, or Hunahpu? That is a brutal decision. We have Skupin, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Varner, Kentucky Joe, and Alicia Calaway. We have Rupert, Queen Sandra, Christa, Jonny Fairplay, and Burton. And Hunahpu per above.

Game Changers is when it really started having a major impact on the gameplay. Before then, it was just one or two gimmicks or advantages per season that weren't idols (which is an essential part of Survivor). I refer to this new era of Survivor as such because of how impactful it has become on the approach to the game.

I still think "old school" goes to 12. I mean, yeah, 1-8 could be called the "Golden Age" with All-Stars being the ending point. I think Vanuatu was the season that started to put people off (don't ask me why), which is what caused the steep drop in popularity. The thing with 11-12 is that idols were such a new thing that nobody, including production, had any idea what to do with them, so it still counts as "old school" to me. With Cook Islands, the gimmicky way to divide tribes, the ability to react to the idol (Cao Boi of all people!), and the final three reshaped the game, which is makes that the first season that's not old school.

I would agree that Golden Age is sort of a subcategory of the Old School era. Like Andy said people felt a let down for Vanuatu after All-Stars and I still don't know why but nevertheless I don't think it and Palau belong with the Survivor Middle Ages.

Nicaragua has always been lower-tier for me. I consider it part of the Dark Ages because of a mostly poor cast (we got Brenda, Holly, Marty, Fabio, Jane, and Sash... and a bunch of rubbish. Holly and Marty are both long overdue for a return.), the biggest MacGuffin in Survivor history (the Medallion of Power), and its "defining moments" being a double quit and the castaways learning that fire burns wood. I rank seasons by how I look back at them. When I look back at Nicaragua, my only fond memory is Holly's storyline. I look back at Redemption Island more fondly because of the first few episodes, the incredible merge boot, and certain someones >_>

Worst season for me is South Pacific, where there's not a single thing I look back upon fondly. Best seasons are Cambodia, Micronesia, and Cagayan, where there is a proper mix of great strategy with entertaining Tribal Councils, character development, general unpredictability, and are rewarding, satisfying television. I rewatched two of those three this year. (Pearl Islands is fourth for similar reasons)

As for the Funny 115... looks like Mario is going to be able to keep the site going for a long, long time. Good for him! (I could maybe chip in a dollar or two...)
