Does your life suck so bad that you have to waste your youth sacrificing for some time youre not guranteed. These austere draconian investment articles like dont drink coffee, buy clothes, dont breath, have been popping up on the Internet and they are cringeworthy lol. Becoming elderly is something I have no ounce of excitement of looking forwards to, so maybe its just me.

I'm killing myself at age 50 if I make it there at all. I have no interest in becoming old.

I think by 70, Ill be content with dying lol. In addition, my grandad died before 50 and my dad is already questionable at 54. What makes me the exception?

Lucky. My great grandpa was 102 when he died and my grandpa is 94 and still going. Longevity runs in my family ;_;

Umm.. We'll be hooking our brains straight into virtual realities by that point. You guys wanna knock yourselves off early? I fully intend to be 95 and flying around the world banging mermaids and fighting dragons.

I just don't like living in general. Virtual or not. I'd really just not exist.

The thing is, living poor when you're young is a lot easier than living poor when you're old. I make sacrifices now so that I'm not struggling later.

Struggling when? The job market favors people over 30?

On the subject of coffee, do you have any idea how much money you save by swearing off of Starbucks? That's a huge money sink.

Struggling when im retired and working full-time is no longer an option. Besides, who wants to still be working some shitty part time job when they're 70?

Well, will you have the same hobbies and lifestyle in youre 70s? Lets be realistic here. 70 year old me can probably get away with living off of 35-40k a year than 24 year old me.

And what do you think would happen when they finally have little mobility and cannot work?

This is why retirement is important.

I agree but Idk why some people literally waste their youths for an age they arent guranteed and cant predict. Yes, I have a 401k but Im not going to be dumping 40-65% of my paychecks in to long term investments like some people do.

What you are talking about (dumping a majority of your paycheck into retirement) is not something 98% of people are doing, so why even worry about it?

Most people are doing what you are doing if they are lucky.

But I just read this article about how I should have 100k in savings with a mortgage almost paid off. For me to have 100k by 30, Im 25, thats a paycheck a month lol!

I don't think he's making an argument against saving for retirement as much as he's making an argument against the people saying that living to an old age is going to be a miserable experience.

Median annual income in the US, depending on how you break down the demographics, is generally in the $20-30k range. Depending on where you live, you're going to be hardpressed to have $100k sitting in the bank, on top of a retirement account, on top of mortgage payments.

That article seems to be geared toward the 'best case scenario' of two married working professionals who knew exactly what they wanted out of life and each other from age 22 onward.
