Oh yeah in case anyone didn't know, racism still very much a thing in Canada, holy fuck the encounter I had today on the bus.

Just some young white kid who sounded drunk as fuck on a tirade over the phone for like 40 minutes without even the slightest effort to lower his voice of the shit he was saying about Chinese/asians, blacks, Mexican, Jews, Somalis, "terrorists"... complaining about them taking over the country, how there's no more white people and white people can't be hired anymore because "it's discrimination or something". Saying they come over running away from their country's problems and just ruin ours, call themselves Canadians but "Canadians don't have c**** eyes". Oh yeah and "Japanese people are only smart because they make anime."

Like this was a bus with plenty of asian people, hijabi women, and black guys he's all complaining about ("What am I supposed to call them African American? But what if they aren't???") and again he doesn't have the slightest bit of care about his volume so people are staring back and moving away.

anyhow yeah I just couldn't believe it so yeah posting

Good example of the disturbing trend in the NYT of coddling white nationalism

oh for the love of--

The quote from the first article supports the writer's thesis, that the seeming normacy of white supremicists is part and parcel of why they are dangerous, as explicitly stated in this quote:
If the Charlottesville rally came as a shock, with hundreds of white Americans marching in support of ideologies many have long considered too vile, dangerous or stupid to enter the political mainstream, it obscured the fact that some in the small, loosely defined alt-right movement are hoping to make those ideas seem less than shocking for the normies, or normal people, that its sympathizers have tended to mock online.

And to go from mocking to wooing, the movement will be looking to make use of people like the Hovaters and their trappings of normie life their fondness for National Public Radio, their four cats, their bridal registry.

Meanwhile, in the second one, the very next paragraph says
At the same time, he regularly flashed a broad smile that endeared those around him. He overcame early struggles in school to graduate on time. He was pointed toward a trade college and a career and, his parents hoped, toward a successful life.

It's almost like taking random paragraphs and presenting them without context can serve to falsely illustrate some random, conspiratorial thesis that has no basis in reality.

But it's important to humanize them so people realize that just because someone likes Seinfield and is polite to their neighbors doesn't mean they're not harboring horrific ideas.

My beef is that the author doesnt play his views off as really all that awful at all. The disdain is definitely there in a subtle way, but its WAY too subtle. He sets the reader up to make the leap that this guy is objectively evil but does none of the legwork to drill it home to people who dont see him as an existential threat.

If youre not paying super close attention and are already wired to hate white nationalism, it really comes across like Wow this guy has extreme beliefs, but really they arent that extreme if you think about it. He has some valid points.

Fuck that.

I don't have as much of an issue with the one on the left as I do with the one on the right ("he was no angel" is basically the poster child for racism in journalism right now though so at least it gets appropriate backlash). The point the author is making about Nazism might be too subtle (it usually is) but at least it's not complete trash like "he drank ALCOHOL and wrote RAP MUSIC".

...Welcome to journalism? A reporter will generally go out of his or her way to be seen as neutral, which means calling an act something "most Americans would find despicable" rather than outright calling it "despicable." This is because the reporter sees their job as to present the facts, and the reader's job to reach the conclusion those facts lead to.

If you're not seeing the conclusion, Jakyl, then that's on you.

(also the "he was no angel" was a direct reference to something Brown had told his father before he died, which was brought up in the opening paragraph of the piece; like most things complained about on Twitter, it's significantly overblown.)

No, I DO in fact see the conclusion, but only because Ive got a radar to be able to instantly pick apart their rhetorical talking points.

My worry is that the average reader might not know that assholes conversation pieces about how Hitler wasnt as bad as they tell you and Holocaust casualty numbers are inflated by the Jews who control governments and media are bullshit.

That's more interesting but it's still hella soft on a literal Nazi. Like take this line:

Why did this man intelligent, socially adroit and raised middle class amid the relatively well-integrated environments of United States military bases gravitate toward the furthest extremes of American political discourse?

Why is this person being described as intelligent or socially adroit? I certainly didn't see anything in either article that points that way; in fact, descriptions in the original article of how he's a Holocaust denier and alienated tons of his friends point to the exact opposite.
