I could dig a FotR "prequel" of sorts. The movies made it seem very short but in the books 17 years pass between chapter 1, where Bilbo leaves the Shire, and chapter 2, where Gandalf tells Frodo about the Ring. I could go for a TV show about what Gandalf was doing during that time.

$200 million is pretty huge for 1 season. Game of Thrones' single-season record was half that. Granted we have to see how many episodes this is going to be, but I doubt it'd be more than 12 or 13 at the most.

So is this going to be an adaptation of stuff from LotR's appendices? Unless they're doing an original story or somehow managed to get the rights for Silmarillion I don't see what else they could be planning.

If I was putting this together, I would try to poke around what is being established in the Shadow of Mordor series; you can push further back in time beyond Talion's storyline but still stay within the bounds of a somewhat modern Middle-Earth.
