Board 8 > Do you feel being good at video games can limit your fun in social settings?

I dont mean playing with a lot of gamer friends. I mean if your at a party with people who only play games casually and decide to turn on the system and play something like Mario Kart, Smash Bros and so on.

Either I decimate and nobody wants to play anymore or I play to their level and Im bored out of my mind.

Anyone else experience this? I figured most of you have.

Last time I went to a party where we played games was like... 10 years ago.

I definitely wouldnt care though.

When I was a kid Id play Smash 64 all the time and destroy everyone with Kirby. It was fun.

Nah, dominating everyone in video games was always fun as a kid. You could still have plenty of fun even if you were winning easily.

If you mean being competitive, Im never competitive in this kind of setting. Its just people who keep a video game system as a novelty rather than a constant hobby are usually really really terrible at games.

Nah if I see I'm smashing people I'll just start dicking around instead which keeps things lighthearted, if they're incredibly competitive and get insulted by that you can't win anyway. I'd avoid playing 1 v 1 games like the plague though.

Yeah, most people Ive played with dont like it when they can tell Im not trying. Theres no good way to go about it

We would rotate people. Sometimes do 3v1. I dont remember much about it.

What smash bros is like the perfect game for this.

I'm a pretty high level tourney player but I can still have stupid fun in free for alls with items and stuff. I pick characters I don't know how to use or just try to go for unsafe flashy things and it's always fun.

It often depends on how you win, ie the quickest way to tilt someone is throw spam them to death in a beat em up then tell them there's ways to counter it when they cry cheese. Whereas if you smash em and make it look good they'll want to return the favour.

All random, normal stages, items on very high, COIN BATTLE.

Not really since I just don't play. Or you can play different modes that are less competitive.

With Smash Bros specifically, I will say items usually helps. Rotating characters doesnt do much.

I think my general social circle just really sucks at video games though. My best friend is probably the only one who is pretty good at most types of games.

Yeah, my friends never cared if they won at Smash Bros. I won like 99% of the time and we always had a blast.

Traditional fighting games are probably the one thing this applies to for me. Stuff like Mario Kart, Smash Bros and w/e other party games are all silly enough that one person dominating shouldn't stop the fun.

Eh I can play down to the level of anyone if I really want to.

Like if I play a dodge-roll and smash attack spammer I'll just try to do the same thing but better.

Though that does get old fast. So score 1 for inception

I always did that as a kid and in high school. Nowadays not so much because everyone is oddly more sensitive as an adult

But a lot of time people just pick games I'm not good at (racing, FPS)

There was a time my theatre was filming B-roll for this fake game rivalry, but they were letting everyone in the audience play a race of Mario Kart 64. I was up against a woman who clearly never played it; she was trying to play with the d-pad. I let her pick the level...and she picked Wario Stadium.

You know exactly what I did: got the greenlight boost, jumped over everyone ahead of me, and jumped that left wall right away (never could get that second-half skip).

The audience went wild and that was the type of ahot they were filming for, but also I just know that poor girl won't want to play games as much anymore. Not only did I finish super-early, I think the AI was rubberbanding to me and they were leaving her behind in last place to race more or less by herself. Always felt bittersweet about that day.

I once ruined WWF No Mercy for a friend too, but he was talking mad shit so I don't feel bad. I beat him and our other roommate in a two-on-one match. Pinned the trash talker too...then I replaced his world champion with AKI Man. I don't think he ever played the game anymore.

Yeah, I had a friend who would spam Samus's Power Beam and another friend who spammed DK's charge punch all the time.

Idk. A decent group of my friends were good at games and we all had like titles we were marginally better at than each other. But smash was the game of choice and the Long Island area had a lot of good players.

Also none of u got into a game party? That was like a thing before common online play

If I'm playing someone who doesn't like getting beat down, I just get drunker than them and try again. Easy.
