Serious question to everyone. Have you noticed ads popping up that you have not typed into any area at all? Like things you have only spoken about in person with others. My mother in law and I were talking about how we noticed it seems like ads are popping up for things we talk about aloud. We then talked about electric fireplaces for a few minutes and look what showed up on her timeline .

We have noticed other items too by the way that arent seasonal and a bit more random so that reasoning can be ruled out. Again, none of these items or related words have been entered online in any way by us.

Yes, Facebook does this (They do it through the microphones on your cell phones)

It's creepy and obnoxious as shit, but they 100% do this.

These stories have been popping up for a while now, probably true. Don't give any apps etc, access to your microphone. Don't know if that would even solve the problem, but I've personally not encountered it. Best shot short of ditching your phone.

Real best countermeasure is to root/jailbreak (if your phone is one of the bad ones that doesn't allow you to remove the app) and then just remove the app entirely. I don't trust the stock permissions models after stuff like https://gizmodo.com/researchers-uber-s-ios-app-had-secret-permissions-that-1819177235 (If you don't like the source, google the story)

This was in a major news article the other day. Facebook denies listening in on you but also did not explain how they knew how to tailor ads to stuff you are discussing. lol

I've noticed pandora does this whenever I use the phrase "I need a new car"

which is particularly funny because my pandora also doesn't realize I haven't been in the zip code it sets its ads to for 6 years

Never actually used the Facebook app or noticed this but I deleted it from my phone just to be safe cause why not delete it.
