Dubbed, more often than not i watch subbed though as it airs first, i just find dubbed better to watch.

Watching black clover subbed it horrible, the main characters voice is bad and he constantly screams in a terrible high pitch.

I usually go with the language I first watch it in. Naruto in English sounds emotionless. DBZ in Japanese sounds really squeaky.

Subs. Almost every time something gets dubbed, it always sounds like the voice actors are putting in absolutely no effort. There are a few shows that I don't mind dubbed though.

And that doesn't necessarily go for just anime. No matter what it is, I'd probably prefer to watch it in its original language.

I used to watch Sub for foreign movies all the time, then I switched to dub because fuck it, sick of reading. It only takes a milisecond to read a sentence but it's nice to just sit back and just watch it.

Subtitles all the way. Always feels like the voice actors mess things up. Sometimes a movie will get a really good dubbing, but I'll still take subtitles.

Plus with subtitles it feels like I'm actually getting sucked into the movie a lot more than just listening to the people talk, where I can easily miss stuff

Depends on the anime in question. Digimon: Dubs every time! The Saban dub of Digimon: Digital Monsters is amazingly good, with perfect casting. My only complaint is that they keep getting confused on the names of WarGreymon's and MetalGarurumon's attacks. But, so does Bandai.

Dubs more often than not, anyway. People who only watch subs = weebs.

Subs for anime, dubs (usually) for video games. I make allowances if I first watched/played something the other way around and am simply used to it now. For instance, a lot of the old shows I used to watch on Toonami (Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, etc.) I'll watch dubbed, even though I now have access to them subbed; similarly, whenever a new Soul Calibur game comes out, my first stop is the options menu to switch the voices over to Japanese, since that's the way they were in SC1 and I find the English voices annoying.

There's plenty of good, non-hipsterish reasons to go for subs over dubs. For one thing, some of us actually speak Japanese.

But even if that's not the case, a lot of studios don't bother to spend the money needed to re-animate characters for the new language, so the voice actors are either stuck trying to sync up their lines to the original animation (when it's almost always done the other way around when an animation is first being made - record voices first, animate the mouths to match up), leading to really awkward sounding lines with out-of place pauses ("So, maybe, if I... just walk... to the store, I'll... meet her") or they don't bother and the mouths don't even remotely match up with what's being said. Sometimes both (the amount of time needed to say the same thing is not constant across languages which, combined with the fact that Japanese is often spoken at a much faster tempo than English, means that English voice actors sometimes have to talk like squirrels just to try and match the animation).

Dub, unless it's really bad, like One Piece. However, I usually end up watching sub anyway cause I can't resist knowing what's going to happen, and for that same reason, I then end up reading the manga if there is one.

Usually dub. There are some bad dubs, but there are also tons of bad subs. In general, there's never been an anime where I've heard a Japanese VA and been so astounded by their performance that I consider it the way to go. At best, their voice might be slightly less annoying than the dub.

Granted, there are some cases where I like both VAs. Richard Moore/Kogoro Mori has *very* different VAs for the dub and sub, but both work after you get used to them. However, when I read the manga, I hear the dub's voice when reading Richard's dialogue

tbh, I should mention that I'm often doing other stuff while watching a show -- like playing a game or posting -- so subs make it kinda hard to multi-task. And, in general, I always hated missing a micro-expression when paying too close attention to the words and, of course, the fact that the text can act as a split-second spoiler.

both. but dubbed is the answer that fits best though. I've never cared for japanese voice actors in general. and while I like having subs on I don't like feeling like I HAVE to read every line of dialogue. I only care for subtitles because I mishear people all the time, but hearing it and having it on the screen at the same time all I need is a quick glance to make sure I heard right.

sorta off topic but that was one thing I liked about street fighter X tekken. you could choose the language for each character, so I made all the Asian characters have JP, and all the western characters have EN. would have been cooler had they had more language options.

Technically a lot of don't have "actual" actors since many anime are adapted from manga or other sources, so the character would have been created without a specific voice in mind. So in that sense the original voice actors aren't that much more authentic than those for other dubs, unless the creators themselves had input on the casting.

For animation it has to be dubbed. I'll skip it if it's subbed because I don't care to read the entire time with my eyes glued to the bottom few inches of the screen.

But for live action it has to be subbed just because the lip movement not matching the audio totally bugs the shit out of me and that's just not an issue with animation.

Yeah, the "actual actor" claim is always fucking stupid since very few roles are written for an actor. As such, both actors are equally valid.

Eh, the topic was strongly implied to be about anime, but yeah, live-action is somewhat different. Granted, dubbing isn't *that* common (into English, anyway) and, where theaters are concerned, it seems like more often see US remakes than dubbed releases.

Live-action dubs in general tend to be dicier on quality. Suspiria was good, for instance, but Demoni 1 & 2 were both kinda bad... although a badly dubbed Demoni still beats a subbed Demoni.
