On the debate of whether it's "Aeris", or "Aerith, I always supported "Aeris". I know I heard around the web that the Japanese developers had intended on Aeris's name being similar to "Earth", but... I figured, "Aeris" was the name in the original release of FFVII, so that's what I was going to go with. It sounded better, looked better, etc. I was always annoyed at Square's new localization team meddling with her name and changing it to "Aerith"...

Well, today I got the actual Japanese FFVII International, and I was looking through it... And I saw this in the character profiles.



I feel like my whole world around me has been shattered. ;_; I don't even know what to think...

I dunno, maybe FFVII International was released after Square already had their new translation team working on FFVIII? And maybe their translation team told them, "Oh, change it to Aerith in the instruction booklet."

I wonder if the original Japanese release still says "Aerith"... I mean, this could just be some fake news created by the localization team's propaganda.

It just... It can't be "Aerith". ;_; It sounds so awful...

it was a mistranslation because japanese vocabulary has no word for -th. that's why the name "smith" is written as "sumisu" and "keith" as "kiisu".

That is the translation of her name, in Japanese it is Earisu or something, it's supposed to be analogous to Earth.

It's really not that bad, and has literally been that way in all material that came out after the original game. Get over it >_>

Tifa is not innocent. She's been trying to seduce Cloud from day one. That pair of "orthopedic underwear" hidden in her drawer is a mis-translation of what was originally underwear that carried the connotation of being slightly too mature for her age (given the flashback, she would have been fifteen or sixteen). What kind of underwear is conspicuously mature for a teenager? Sexy lingerie. Why did she buy the sexy lingerie? Use your eyes sweetie.

That said, Aerith was originally written to have been the more worldly and less delicate of the two, and was openly flirtatious and teasing towards Cloud (even though she wasn't actually interested in him). At least until Square's design team changed hands in the early aughts and they went total Madonna-whore complex. They essentially canonized her as the patron Saint of the Earth, cloying purity, chase love, and wholesome virginal sisterly maturity.

the first time i played FF7 it was the PC port. it was Aerith in that, and there were tons of fixes in the original translation. there was no "This guy are sick." looking back on it i somewhat feel like i missed out lol.

do they censor the "sit down and drink your goddamn tea"? would be disappointing if it is.
