I really like the taste of cilantro, but apparently others think it tastes like soap? Weird how drastically the taste differs

same. According to wikipedia, it has chemicals in the aldehyde family (but completely edible and non-toxic ones), so I imagine embalming fluid has the same sort of taste. Some people have a genetic tolerance to such chemicals, so they don't notice that flavor at all, and whatever other flavors it has are what they taste, while others do not have that tolerance and therefore can ONLY taste those chemicals and to an overpowering degree. To me, what comes to mind is dish soap mixed with mold.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't have much of an opinion on it. Don't hate it, but a little definitely goes a long way and I find that it easily overpowers other flavours. It's not something I'd choose to add to a dish, but I don't mind if it's already on there.

This is true for me. I'm pretty sure I would literally hurl if I was ever forced to eat a pickle. Even when I have to remove a pickle from a burger, it's still ruined just because of the lingering smell. Can't think of any food that disgusts me more.

I apparently have that gene too, so I can't handle it.
I've honestly tried, but it's no use. It kills any chance of the food around it being enjoyable for me.

But hey, the way I see it, more cilantro for the others who actually enjoy it, so it works out.

I don't use it much to really know for sure, but at the least when I use it in marinade it seems to improve the taste nicely, so I assume I don't have the same issue.

Pickles are fine on sandwiches and burgers unless you dump half the brine on it or you let it sit there for a long time or something. When Papa John's tried cheeseburger pizza and thought the primary ingredient in a cheeseburger was pickles that was perhaps the worst thing I've ever tried to eat in my life.

Didn't know cilantro had that issue, so I'm good with it.

I feel like cilantro has a sort of lemon-lime taste. Like kind of citrusy. Goes really good with things like burritos

Yeah I'd definitely describe cilantro as 'citrusy'. Maybe a slight tinge of peppery, but not quite as much.

I'm not a HUGE fan of it, personally, but I use it in cooking relatively regularly. I've even just added it raw to salads a couple times when I'm in the mood (not terribly often though).

90% of people who think cilantro tastes like soap just hate flavor. That gene is not that common. The anti-pickle comments prove it. Mayo is too spicy too huh?

Nope. I love dill pickles, vinegar, ridiculous amounts of garlic, all variety of olives (stronger taste the better). All things with overpowering flavor and I can't get enough of them.

Anything that has fresh cilantro in it, I can taste literally nothing else and it just is not edible. (I've had dried cilantro and it is completely flavorless to me, which makes sense because the Wikipedia article I mentioned says the aldehyde chemical flavor fades away as it dries/loses freshness)

Not the same chemical compounds at all from the genetic stance. Parsley is slightly bitter, but nice. It is subtle for me, even if I use a lot. So yes, I like it. It tastes as different to cilantro to me as basil tastes to bourbon, or ketchup to eggs, or strawberries to falafel. That's how crazy the gene discrepancy is.

If I recall correctly, parsley doesn't taste as actively bad as cilantro.
That said, it has the general taste of weeds, so I don't care for it much. If I was forced to choose, I'd probably go with the parsley, though.

Yeah, one time Tom brought home fresh parsley as I requested, and for a brief moment I thought he got the wrong thing so I picked it up and started waving it around yelling, "Who has brought this DEVIL WEED into our home?!"
