It would be more surprising if a console Mario/Zelda/etc big name Nintendo game was getting bad reviews. They almost all review well. Mario Galaxy 2 even did and it was basically the first game with a couple Yoshi parts slapped in, but because it was so similar it wasn't really as much fun

there is a difference between reviewing well and "top 0.0% on opencritic" although i am aware galaxy 2 did get that level of reviews too

Yep, that's why I enjoyed the original more. I can admit that 2 is more polished, but Galaxy was bursting with originality that 2 couldn't recapture because... it was a straight sequel released not too long (2.5 years?) after the original.

But anyway, this is exciting news. I think it's the first time since the N64 that a Nintendo console's Mario and Zelda offerings both received universal, best-in-the-industry praise.

It's true though. I'm not saying it sucks, but it's practically the same game. Yoshi wasn't used nearly enough and the lack of Rosalina makes it worse than the first imo

From what I remember, 2 didn't take as onerous an approach to motion controls as the original did (it largely ignored them, which may have been a smart move after the original's motion control levels were some of its less popular). It also featured more 2D sections and more nostalgia aimed at Mario 64 (the original might have had none).

Again, the game was tighter and more polished, but few of those additions really wowed me, whereas the original Galaxy made me feel like a kid again despite its more glaring faults. I definitely had more fun with the first.

Galaxy 2 borrowed some sections directly from 64 and Sunshine. It still had some terrible motion control segments though.

That's basically what I was going for. Galaxy 2 didn't have the same wow level as the first. Really though it feels like it could've just been $20-$30 post game DLC to Galaxy 1 in a lot of ways to me.

Galaxy 2 doesn't get the points for originality that Galaxy 1 did, but the second game's design blows the first utterly and completely out of the water. Galaxy 2 is a triumph of level design.

Yeah, I guess if you value that experience of freshness and originality, Galaxy 1 is better. Galaxy 2 as a pure platformer is just better though.

I couldn't get into Galaxy 1 at first but 2 mostly blew me away from the start.

I think the more straightforward approach worked a lot better. Galaxy 1 tried to do some open SM64 inspired stuff that didn't gel that well.

Best Sonic Game ever. (At least before generations)

I don't really hold Mario to high standards to begin with. It's an ok series with some good games. The 2 most recent ones I played (3D Land and Galaxy 2) didn't really do much for me.

3D Land/World is just 3D NSMB.

Ok they're better than that, at least World, but still not by that much.
