I have this employee who busts his ass every single day, comes in early if it's needed, even comes in on the weekend. He dominates everyone else at the same job. (Not just 3rd shift, he shits on 1st and 2nd too).

He approached me yesterday about a raise. I feel like he really deserves one. I told him I would put in for one for him since I don't have the authority to just approve it on the spot.

Sent the email to the Owner, the gm, and the COO detailing everything he does and why I feel like he should get a raise.

Not even two minutes after I hit send I get a reply from the gm saying "raises are only done yearly after a review". A couple emails back and forth about how he is the best employee on any shift and how the company would need to hire two people to replace him, same answer.

Now I have to sit down the best worker and tell him he can't have a raise until his review in January. He's going to walk out, and I don't blame him.

How can they expect me to keep these guys motivated if I can't even reward them for outstanding performance?

We get a yearly bonus around December so I'm sure they will just say that.

I can probably get him a $25 gas card but that sounds insulting.

bonuses are typically done around the holidays. So it makes sense that annual reviews are in January for your company.

Moral is low and I could tell from talking to him yesterday he's checked out. If he wants to quit I'm going to offer him two weeks of just hanging out in the office. I'll cover for him and write him an awesome recommendation letter.

I remember being sat down for a review by a manager once and she told me I qualified for a raise, but point blank told me upper management would most definitely find a way to not approve it. and she was right, never got told why I didn't get it, just that I didn't get it. then I did end up getting a raise and a promotion which came with another raise. (all and all though it only came up to 30 cents more a hour) and they suddenly became the strictest assholes towards me writing me up for shit that wasn't even my fault, and just giving me a shit ton more things to do during my day. ended up telling them it wasn't worth the fucking 30 cents and walked.

How long have you been a manager? It's normal business practice to budget for raises on a yearly basis. It surprises me not at all that you would hear something like that from those higher than you in a company. If it isn't in the budget, it's not in the budget. If he's a good employee, you should convince him that he will be rewarded at his annual review and that he should stay. That's your job as a manager.

There are also performance-based raises. And, in most companies, you're not going to make or break a budget on a small raise. Likewise, people will break policy when it suits them. If he threatened to resign, he might suddenly find himself with a raise.
