i just wonder since tie-in material is a sketchy subject on comic book boards and more so when it concerns cartoons because it could go one of two ways

1.it could explore character relationships and stories that the show couldn't or wouldn't do

or the worst

2.it could be a poorly planned rushed out tie-in that reads like a bootleg version of the show and only exists to scam fans of the series out of their money

If they are good, they are good.
If they are bad, they are bad.

I am fine with it, but with that said I have yet to see it done well. Most of the time it is just a cash-in on the popularity of said cartoon in order to try and get more money off the kids who like it.

I always use Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as an example. The original comic version is awesome (or at least it is when Kevin Eastman is involved with it). The cartoon based of the comic is also awesome (for arguably different reasons, least of which the comic is targeted at teens while the cartoon is targeted at kids). The comic based off the cartoon that is based off the comic though, that is actually pretty bad. All it does is rehash stories from the cartoon, and very rarely create anything new. That even extends into the modern iterations of it: TMNT ongoing is great, TMNT Adventures is bad.

How often did we have Turtles comics based on the then current cartoon?
The first five Archie comics were direct adaptions of the first cartoon episodes, but after that it turned into a different universe compared to the cartoon.
Dreamwaves four first comics were based on the 03 cartoon, but after that they went their own direction until it got cancelled after seven issues.
I dont follow the Nickelodeon cartoon or comic so I dont know how close it follows each others, but other than that, I cant remember any other comic based on cartoon TMNT series.

Those were basically it, IDW does the current one based on the Nickelodean cartoon. I honestly am not that familiar with the current cartoon (mostly because it is not targeted at my age group), but the comic based off of it is really bad.

Like I said the TMNT ongoing (which has nothing to do with the cartoon) is pretty decent. It takes a lot of elements from the 87 cartoon and does them in a way that fits in more with the comic universe. For example the current story line has to do with Krang (who was created in the cartoon) being tried in a galactic court for his crimes.

But Krang was inspired by the original Mirage Utroms, all they did was taking one and turn him evil.
All cartoons and comics draws inspirations from the original Mirage comic if they keep going long enough. Like the arch before City War, where they get defeated badly by Shredder and have to hide in a cabin in the woods, it seems to be the most reused story in the turtlesverse.

i think it becomes a huge problem when it's a comic based off a old cartoon that is no longer airing new episodes such as the rocko's modern life and rugrats comics out soon

because then you could have crappy comics put out to feed on the nostalgia of 90's kids

There are many examples of good comics based on old cartoons, but you always ignore when I bring that up.
How many more times will you remake this topic?

yes i know there are good examples and I've probably read some but that doesn't mean it's always the case as most licensed comics drift from being crap to good and good to crap again quite often

quality control these days on those books aren't really a thing

they can be quite good but considering their purpose unless it's something like the old sonic comics that had a consistent creative team

issues can be inconsistent

Always depends on the handling. Comics in general can be a great way of resolving storylines not covered in the cartoon, such as Avatar's comic apparently involving the search for Zuka's mom.

Plus it's a cheap way of extending popular series. Batman Beyond got one, for instance.

Just like when any form of media goes from one to another. It can be good or it can be awful. Most of the time, I'm a little hesitant of it, it being the secondary media.
