yeah I can only afford to drive home like once a year or once every other year. thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays though so I would have liked to be up there if I could. sadly it's just not possible. I only have three days off. It's not worth the cost or the exhaustion to go all the way up there for just a few days and come right back.

HUGE breakthrough on the dungeon generation aspect I've been working on.

The game can now

1. Spawn the entrance to the first of the randomized dungeons on the exterior map outside of Port.
2. When you leave the dungeon, the entrance to the dungeon disappears.
3. When you come back the next day, the dungeon entrance will reappear.

4. While navigating the dungeon the game
a. Knows which way you are facing
b. Sends you to an appropriate randomized room with a connecting passage facing the correct direction
c. Counts the number of rooms you have traversed
d. Knows how long the dungeon is supposed to be (randomly set between 5-7 rooms when you first enter)
e. When you've traversed the target number of rooms, sends you to a final room with a treasure

according to my permutations calculator

there are 11,088 possible dungeon layouts that can be generated

this is less interesting than it sounds sadly -- really just cycling 19 different maps in various ways -- but still a cool fact

also I'd say for the first and smallest of the random dungeons this is still a nice amount of variety

the random dungeon is now populated with spiders, slimes, and scorpions. the game will now trigger the 'defeat' event when you take enough damage to drain your HP. previously I just had it so that your HP would stay at 1 forever while I was testing out mechanics but now the game is fleshed out enough that I don't want this god mode on anymore. it's more valuable to playtest under the condition of a normal player who would be at risk of defeat if they don't monitor their HP value.

I also have this 'defeat' event set as a common script. as of right now all it does is return you back to your home. however, in the future, I may want to impose penalties on players who get defeated. for that reason I'll simply need to modify the script and this will change the defeat state game wide. as opposed to me programming defeat into each monster encounter and then if I wanted to add penalties I'd have to go back and fix EVERY monster event in the game.

exterior city maps now 100% done with all transitions. to put that another way it is now possible to walk around the entire city in the game now. also got some NPC designs done.

got my first 100% dunzo NPC completed and put into the game. Jean Vino, a young boy who moved to Port with his grandfather from the big city. He actually loves it out here in the relatively smaller town, which he considers the country. they live together at the Temple.

he currently moves around the town as needed based on where his schedule says he's supposed to be, and transitions between three different dialogue pools after introducing himself to the player. if you go find him in the morning he'll have a special dialogue about how he's searching for his tackle before leaving to go to the docks.

if you want to see all of his dialogue, I posted the scripts into my topic that I made to discuss stuff with the writers (link is in post 282. I don't want to clog up dante's The Topic by reposting all of the scripts again here).

My vision is that you start on the staircase at the top of the map. The ancillary rooms can be explored or ignored in any order but I might do stuff like place locked doors in certain passages so if you have a way to bypass them you can get through areas quicker or while avoiding monsters.
The big square room on the left side is where the floor boss will be, and once he's defeated it unlocks the door leading to the rectangle room on the bottom left.
The rectangle room will have some nice loots
And then you can proceed to the staircase that leads down to B2


(This is of course one of the Fixed dungeons, not a randomized dungeon)

My new work place has the strictest internet blocking I have ever encountered. my work is so laissez faire about everything, no sites are blocked, you can use headphones like w/e, etc

unless you actively fuck up (and probably continously), then they have the ability to pull basically anything to screw you. Apparently they store your computer activity and there are logs for every time you enter the building and stuff. but in our environment they never have a reason to look at that stuff so
