All her talk about her island, Atua, etc..and I just..couldn't care about this at all
Not because it's Angie or because it isn't interesting, but because I know it isn't "real"

Now of course, Danganronpa being fiction means it isn't real to begin with, but when it's a "fiction inside a fiction" it's harder to care about it even more

I rewatched the trial and I don't think so. He was clearly angry but he'd also seemed to have accepted the truth. I don't think it's in his character to do something so dangerous out of spite, while with Kokichi we know he actually HATED everything he was doing during the game.

This. Not only is Tsumugi's whole account INCREDIBLY suspicious and doesn't add up with several things, but its actually implied pretty heavily that while they might not be 'Ultimates', their base personalities actually aren't that different from their real ones (Kaede in the prologue mentions 'she has a skill she devotes herself to', among other things).

While its impossible to say for sure, its extremely likely that a lot of things from their 'fictional backstories' aren't actually fictional.

Also I'd just like to point out that the main thing that points to Tsumugi lying pretty heavily actually IS the prologue. For instance, Kaede remembers getting kidnapped, but doesn't after. This implies her memories haven't been rewritten at this point. Further, she acts nothing like she is presented in the last case by Tsumugi (someone who hates the world and wants to die because of it)- she acts fairly like the Kaede presented by the game, even inside her own mind. Lastly, if all of the participants were 'Danganronpa super fans' and their memories weren't wiped at this point, wouldn't they recognize both walking talking bears (even assuming the Monokubs were new characters), the 16 people in a secluded place setup, and most importantly, one of the survivors from the last season?

There is just waaaaaaaaaay too many things that don't have adequate explanations which let them line up with Tsumugi's account, beyond even what Shuichi brings up at the post-credits scene.

So you really should not put too much stock in the 'everything is fictional' thing.

I'm also not even really convinced that all of the Danganronpa sequels mentioned are a real thing, honestly. Why have 53 of them and then only bring up things from the first 3? Why was there just a History of Hopes Peak Academy book sitting in Kokichi's lab if its a fictional setting? etc.

This is the first time I've heard this talk of Tsumugi making everything up, and that sounds like a terrible ending.

Kodaka has even said several times in interviews to people complaining about the ending making 'everything not matter' "You should probably go back and reread the prologue, you probably missed something"

And it doesn't make the ending terrible, if anything it totally saves it. It was terrible before that. The entire premise of the ending if it was played totally straight is stupid as all hell. And I don't mean the whole 'its a commentary from Kodaka about being tired of writing Danganronpa and he hates his fans!' misinterpretation that some people have.

It saves it, of course, if they follow up on it anyway. Which they probably will. Kodaka has said he wants the series to continue under someone else's writing (but he himself is done).

The ending rules, it's amazing.

Obviously even in the original Japanese version he is kind of hard to get, but still not as a mess he was in the English version

It's pretty long, so two points I found the most interesting-

One of the first and most important points about Oumas motive video, mentioned almost right off the bat, is that Ouma and DICE strictly forbade murder. It was one of their two most important mottos as a group, the other being to commit fun, laughable pranks. His video is explicit about the fact that he and DICE as a whole didnt condone murder. And yet, incredibly enough, this line was removed entirely from his motive video in the localization.

The explanation Ouma gives in his flashback with Momota is, quite literally, that he hates the killing game because of how many lives it took. He reveals that it was all a lie he had to tell himself in order to survive, but the crux of why he hated it so much was that he was horrified by the sheer loss of life. He specifically says, The verb (also written ) means to kill, to do someone in, etc. So what he says, quite literally, is this: As if theres any fun in a game that kills people like this A more natural-sounding translation would be something like, As if a game that takes peoples lives like this could ever be fun.

The localized line, however, drops the ball entirely. It was translated as follows: H-How could a game that youre forced to play be fun? This completely changes well, everything about Oumas last words, his motivation, and his entire character. Rather than hating and detesting the game because of the number of lives it took, and because he himself is morally opposed to murder, it makes it sound as though he would be absolutely fine with the killing game (and with killing in general) if only the participation wasnt forced.

Yeah I thought it was a bit of a bummer how the localization made it a lot less clear how much he was horrified throughout the game and hated everything about it and himself during it. I'm sure that made him voting for himself in trial 4 less clear in retrospect as well.

One thing I need someone to explain is the Angie hate. I mean, she's not a great character, she was still low on the list, but I was more "meh" on her than actively disliking. Starting a cult wasn't the best idea, but at the very least, her heart was in the right place, and she genuinely wanted everyone to live in peace.

Rantaro's hard to rank, because his character exists outside of the game. We don't see him enough to develop.

Chapter 3 was just insufferable with Angie. I couldn't stand a single moment of her talking. In contrast, I didn't like Tenko before chapter 3 but she went way, way up in chapter 3 for me.

I imagine you ranked Mahiru low, too.
