I thought Danganronpa 2 would stand as the absolute peak of (highly entertaining) complete and utter idiocy in video game writing

sweet mother of god I was wrong

holy shit everything here was so fucking stupid I don't even have words for it

and yet I was still so entertained by it

what the fuck lol

(and obviously I'm not going to post the literal endgame reaction in the literal hype thread)

It is a fucking masterpiece of absurdity. I think it might be my favorite ending to anything ever. The people who said spoilers will RUIN this game were absolutely right.

Danganronpa 2 has always been in the running for my favorite game, but it's a tough call right now. I cannot deny the I liked less characters in this one and the middle was weaker, but that opening and ending, holy shit.

And few characters have ever managed to change as much on retrospect as Kokichi. His connection to the theme of the game blows Nagito away.

As far as characters go, I just feel like that while there are less characters in the absolute top tier (Like most of the actual good characters from the first two games were), there are also less that actually just belong in the dumpster and should never be seen again (Angie is basically the only one I feel this way about)

There were a lot of really good characters, though. Definitely my favorite cast of the three as a group (I may do a ranking or something later but I'd need to ponder it a lot. I think I'll just leave it at Maki and Korekiyo being my favorites for now)

Kokichi is still by far the worst character. Easily the worst cast of the DR games.

Ending was pretty fun. Definitely absurdly entertaining. I'd thought throughout the whole game that the memories they had were fake and they weren't really Ultimates, especially since Shuichi being the Ultimate Detective was impossible. Only thing that made me question that was Keebo being a robot. I was waiting for it to turn out that Cospox was a lie after Tsumugi was revealed to be the mastermind, but the fiction twist was so good. Definitely better than Chapter 6 of DR2, though I probably still like the first game's Chapter 6 better. Disappointed that Shuichi survived in the end, despite being marked for death, though he did at least have his cool moment where he sided with Despair.

Chapters: 6 > 1 > 5 > 3 > 4 > 2

Wasn't really into any of chapters 4/3/2. Kokichi being lame really held everything back, and the twists in 2/3 were entirely too boring.

I liked Kokichi, but that's mostly because I had him marked as just a chuuni brat instead of a credible suspect/mastermind basically from his introduction and thus viewed everything from that perspective instead

Oh, I never thought he was the Mastermind, even when he said he was. He actually did get Gonta killed though, which is irredeemable enough. And everything he said was just plain annoying. I never expected him to commit a murder from the start, since he seemed like a copy of Byakuya (who is the worst character in DR1, IMO).

Shuichi asking him to tell him when he's accepted what happened and Gonta just responding "OK" while crying is probably the saddest single moment in DR.

Just judging entirely off this poll with Tsumugi in last, I'm guessing Japan hated the main plot twist

But even putting that aside, there are so many things wrong here that I don't even know where to start

also, while I'm thinking about it, special shoutouts to the Scrum Debate and Ch 5/6 Investigation themes for being amazing, and somebody was kind enough to upload things to youtube already

Also shoutouts to Hangman's Gambit for being better than in previous games, which still makes it a 0/10 minigame

I guess my initial feeling was "unsatisfied" but I really liked the entire game and it's tough to actually digest it properly into words. Guess I wanted more, since I was basically right on the huge plot twist ahead of time. And I'm never right about stuff. If I didn't think the game was a farce I probably would have been super blown away and loving it.

9. Keebo
10. Ryoma
11. Kaito
12. Kirumi
13. Korekiyo
14. Angie
15. Shuichi
16. Kokichi

Miu is the best. She was always entertaining, she had a decent amount of story importance, she talked a lot, and her writing was perfect. If I were to make a top 5 DR character list, she'd be the only v3 character in it. Maybe even if I were to make a top 10 list? Her only negatives are that her reactions to Kokichi are a bit tiresome and overly reminiscent of Byakuya and Toko's in DR1, and her Free Time conversations are lame (her suddenly falling in love with Shuichi is weird and lame, and her constantly insulting Kaede for having a flat chest is really strange considering how stacked Kaede is).

I was thinking Tsumugi would be hard to place before chapter 6. She's basically the normal girl of the group, which I don't generally like, but she pulled it off fairly well? She had a good sense of humor and was relatively intelligent. Then in Chapter 6 she was very good, which is enough to blow away the rest of the cast. Junko-style escapades always good times.

Other than that I'm not sure there's too much to comment on. I feel like Maki should've been better than she was? Felt like they played it kinda safe with her character. Keebo definitely got a boost from everything in Chapter 6, especially going on a robo-rampage. I didn't really mind Angie that much in the first two chapters, but she was fairly obnoxious in Chapter 3 (I wonder what would've happened if she'd done the revival spell?). Shuichi was a little better in chapter 6 and Kokichi was a little better in chapter 5, but I never stopped disliking either of them. Can post opinions on the rest if anyone's interested.

2. Monodam
3. Monophanie

5. Monosuke

Monokid is awesome. Part of the reason Chapter 1 is better than the others, since he's by far my favorite of the gang. Everything he says and does is basically hilarious. His Hell Yeah! is incredible too (I played in Japanese, in which he says it in Engrish constantly). Monodam's anti-bullying personality was pretty compelling. Always good when he talked, or when he didn't. Monosuke was kinda lame. Didn't even get his gimmick? Overall though, the Monokubs were really great. I was actually disappointed when Monokuma showed up, since I liked them a lot more than Monokuma. Feels weird having Monokuma still around without the old voice actress.

The JP voice acting is basically always great. Gundam and Junko are incredible performances. Not sure I was blown away by any VA in 3, though Miu's was very good. It was a really nice touch when we saw the real Shuichi too. Normally, he talks smoothly, like any fictional character would. When you see the real version, he talks kinda haltingly with natural pauses between words, since real people don't have the advantage of spending hours writing their own dialogue. Not sure they did that in the English version?

Some added thoughts on minigames:

Hangman's Gambit: This feels a bit better than the previous ones? Largely because you can hold circle to speed things up so it's not as interminable. Still feel like it works better in Japanese though (I played DR2 in Japanese).

Argument Armament: Hated this. It's super easy and takes a long time and it's boring. Maybe it'd be better on hard mode or something, but I doubt that would make it any faster.

Psyche Taxi: The worst minigame. Maybe the worst DR minigame period? It takes forever to play and it's incredibly easy and you rarely get much for new information. I never made a single mistake while playing this. Was annoyed whenever it popped up.

Mind Mine: Not too bad since you can play at your own pace, but I don't really get why it exists. At least it's inoffensive.

Debate Scrum: This is the best. I was always excited when it came up. It has cool music and it's just super fun lining up all the arguments. I got better at it later in the game which made it a little less fun, but it was always good.

Mass Panic Debate: This was pretty cool. Made things more complicated but not too much to handle. Only point of annoyance was that sometimes it'd take so long to silence the loud text that I wouldn't have time to fire off my bullet. I got better at it by the end though.

Sword Debate Thing (can't remember the name <_<): Pretty good. Was sometimes hard to follow everything that was being said though, and the slashes weren't as precise as I would've liked.

Lying: A very cool new mechanic. It'd be really interesting to see all the places you can lie throughout the game and how that would change things. Unfortunately, and maybe this was just me missing something, there's no way of telling what the lie is going to be until you hold down the button, and then you have to fire it and lose influence. Definitely hurt my willingness to experiment with it.

Closing Arguments: Mentioned this earlier, but it's way too slow. Putting together the argument is fun, but watching it unfold is terrible. The earlier games did this way better. Not sure what they were thinking here.

My rank:

2. Himiko
3. Shuichi
4. Maki
5. Kaede
6. Miu
7. Ryoma
8. Kaito
9. Kirumi
10. Tenko
11. Tsumugi
12. Angie
13. Keebo
14. Rantaro
15. Gonta
16. Korekiyo

I like everyone 14 and up...Gonta's dialogue really got on my nerves, but I like him as a character? Korekiyo was the only disappointment for me; his design is awesome but all of his story elements are really boring. For me, there's nothing worse than a character who treats the killing game as an everyday situation. It really negates the emotional tension of the situation.

While I really love this overall cast, Kokichi is the only one to be comparable to my top from Danganronpa 2; but even then, Gundham, Chiaki, and Ibuki have a clear advantage.

Frankly the only minigame that was remotely interesting was Scrum Debate (Though Nonstop Debate continued to be as inoffensive as ever, and Mass Panic would be an interesting twist if not for the issue you mentioned). It really highlights how bad the trial gameplay is in this series overall.

I legit just held Circle all through the Closing Argument wrap-up segments, since there was literally no new information in any of them.

God, Hangman's Gambit. Ropeway? I knew exactly what was being discussed but I've never heard this specific word before...

Or that part where it expects you to guess "implant" even when several other words of the same length would mean the same thing.

It's such a stupid setup. If you know the answer, it's tedious. If you don't know the answer, there's no real way of finding more information out beside randomly hitting letters and hoping it's correct. Pretty much anytime I get a game over in this series, it's in this mini game.

Yeah, the penalty for even considering lying was a really bad decision by the developers; you basically had to try to read the developers' minds to figure out what the lie about a piece of evidence would be.

The epilogue felt really important, to give some closure to the characters. *shrug*

The problem is basically that it works better in Japanese, where less characters per word means it's closer to playing those old word jumble games than the experience you get in English.

though IIRC the word there in Japanese was literally "ropeway" written in kana and that one also threw me for a loop so >_>

Does anyone beside Gonta and Kokichi actually get exposed to the truth of the outside world flashback light?

I'm wondering if they both saw more than we think they did/if it ties into the actual truth of the outside world. Gonta's motive still doesn't sit well with me, but it would make more sense if they saw what was actually happening. Since Gonta himself doesn't remember and Kokichi lies, I wasn't sure if this was a possibility (since it wasn't something I considered until well after the fact).

I have been playing the main two all fate. It's a cycle. The training whatever thing is a board game, where you take a character across a board to level up and learn abilities. Most importantly....well, least importantly, but most importantly to me, you also have friendship squares which has TONS of crossover interactions between characters from all 3 games.

The characters you uograde in this board game.are then taken into Mokokuma Test, which is a simple RPG where you earn money and gear. Money is used in a gacha to unlock new characters. Rinse and repeat.

Salmon is this games Free Time Event mode, though I believe ever character actually has ten events in it and can be dated. Haven't played it yet.
