i'm not against welfare, just people who abuse the system, like ICOYAR, then talk shit about people who actually need that money like (i'm assuming) you, ok?

Even if someone uses their welfare check to buy a video game here or there that's not even that bad. Or saving up what's leftover over time to buy a used console or new console even. But he straight uses the money for nothing but video games, consoles, and pc part purchases while his parents actually pay for what the money is intended for. Then he rails against the system he abuses instead of just not using the system. It's extremely bizarre. He calls people who use welfare degenerates while he abuses the disability system to a horrible degree.

he could work from home in a solitary environment.

this is by his own design. he refuses to interact with people in real life. he's refused help of anyone that's ever tried to give it to him. his parents have attempted to get him therapy and he refused that help.

he's satisfied to just game the system he allegedly hates and views as degenerate while supposedly not being a degenerate? it doesn't make sense.

However, I put myself through college, using ssi for tuition and supplies. When I graduated with an associates, went for my CompTIA A+ and completed, and held down a desktop support job for three years now. Lately, a second job on weekends that's more-so part-time.

I've also been off social security for about a year and a half now. Once I started making more than I was receiving each month, I cut myself off from social security. Don't need to receive money from social security when I'm already putting money in and making more every two weeks?

I personally consider being neurochemically incapable of motivation to be a pretty good excuse for not being motivated. Finding the motivation to recover from depression usually relies on outside support, unless it happens spontaneously.

Precisely. It wouldn't necessarily have to be charging rent specifically, but something along those lines to incentivize recovery. As it stands, he's stagnating, and his parents have the power to change that.

Not to comment on ico specifically, because I generally don't comment on people's offline lives unless they bring it up themselves, but adjl is completely correct when he said that real, bonafide depression is a neurochemical condition. It's a lot more than just "having the blues" or "not trying hard enough"; it's a literal chemical imbalance in your brain that fucks around with your moods and your motivation. That's why most treatment for depression involves medication - it's often not enough to just talk it out with a psychologist (although that's typically included as well), you need some things to adjust a chemical imbalance.

I grew up with a family member that had depression. She had a great life - her husband pulled in $750k a year, they loved each other dearly, she lived in a nice house in the country, her life was great and she completely acknowledged that - and she couldn't understand why she was constantly miserable and some days could barely muster the energy to get out of bed.

Depression isn't an excuse; it's a disease that requires proper treatment.
