Alright I was inbetween like 4 songs to pick, thinking I would definitely do one then another one coming up and making me rethink. Finally decided on one I thought about earlier last week

Circa Survive- The Amulet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuPHC5XUAr0

This is my favorite Circa song in a long while, everything just clicks for me with how ethereal it is.

Pretty cool song, the constant build-up to around the 2 minute mark definitely feels magical and enveloping and the song ends with a really powerful climax.

I'll do a little commentary on my own song this time. The riff and drumming are super catchy along with the DJ aspects, and the rapped vocals have good lyrical content and a good message to them. The sample used in this song fits really well too; any song with a cool sample like that is liable to hook me right away.

Hilariously, I forget to pause my playlist before playing this song and I thought this song was sampling Brand New's Seventy Times Seven at first! It actually sounded kinda good. On to the actual song though, it's just a tad repetitive and bland and the electronic looping thing in the background gets old fast. The vocals were a little interesting though.

Circa Survive- The Amulet
I bust out laughing as soon as the video began. The singer's voice does not match his appearance at all. It's super jarring. He sounds like he's 14. It's a shame too, because I think the backing instrumentation is rad. But yeah, I don't care for the vocals at all.

Incubus - New Skin
I like Incubus. They'll never be my favorite or anything, but they're always at the very least decent, and New Skin is just that.

Circa Survive - The Amulet
Wow yeah mcflubbin aint' lyin about the voice not matching the appearance. He sounds good though. Dig the guitar tone. I wish music videos would stop doing the slo-mo lipsync thing, it's a cool effect hypothetically but I feel like it never actually syncs up smoothly enough to convince the eye. Point is I got more into the song by not watching the video. It ended up having a nice atmosphere but I wish it had more bite or thickness to it. It's like the endless breadsticks of music - soft, zesty, a little moist, but ultimately not what I put on pants and drive to Olive Garden for.

Incubus - New Skin
Man I forgot how aggro they sounded on this album. I just saw them about a month ago and though they still knock out the heavier hits they don't play anything quite this frenzied anymore. This song is just a clear, cohesive blend of rap/funk/metal elements that sounds totally organic and I've always loved Brandon Boyd's weird voice. Solid pick.

Louis Cole - You Will See
This is the most bizarre, dissonant, dark shit I've heard out of Louis Cole and I love it. I couldn't help but be reminded of Venetian Snares, his drumming is always so intense and it contrasts so well with the narcotic nightmare lullaby vocals. There's a real sense of dread here, it's a very powerful two minutes.

Steve Lacy - Dark Red
I'm liking the vocal production here, the singer has this cool Damon Albarnish crooner intonation that really drives the vibe of the tune home and the swirl of voices around him add a lot of dynamics and texture to the progression. It actually manages a timeless quality without being in-your-face retro.

SZA - Drew Barrymore
You don't hear much rap using a drum kit like you would hear in a rock ballad, so this was a pleasant departure from the usual hi-hat drill trap beat. It really sells the intimate/vulnerable bent of the lyrics. She's got a decent flow to boot and I enjoyed all the playful processing on her vocal - but what's this got to do with Drew Barrymore?

Sampha - (No One Knows Me) Like the Piano
Honestly I thought he would be a more impressive pianist. Excellent singer and this is obviously a personal song for him but for a piano-based composition this just doesn't do it for me.

you will see is actually in 4/4 the whole time except for one bar of 5/4 during a gap thing. It's just really weird 4/4, sounds like 'odd time' mostly because of the franticness and the 5+5+5/etc weirdness of the string part.

oh ok.

wasn't totally sure if it was in odd time (and hey, it's not entirely in 4/4 so i wasn't completely off), but i didn't think you'd already do a 4/4 song for your second song!

In pop culture, Drew Barrymore has become synonymous with ideas of insecurity and pursuit for identity. In the late 1980s and 1990s she often played angsty teens in movies like Never Been Kissed and Poison Ivy. - Genius

loved this. kinda the same deal as seg's song from last week - love the genre (in this case it's neo soul jazz-ish music i guess), but within the genre it's just a really cool song too. it was very well written (i liked some sections better than others, but i thought all of the sections were good) and the brief solo section was nice too. i want to check out more of this band. seg is 2/2 on doing great songs for this!

gotta agree with snake here - it sounds like it's slowly building to an exhilarating climax in a post-rock manner but then it just... sort of... ends. decent tune, though. and i do want to check out more of this band too - according to wikipedia they play dream pop and i'm kind of obsessed with that genre, so...

and in the "lasa learns about genres he's never heard about before" department, wikipedia tells me they also play "nu-gaze" - apparently this is just a term for the revival of shoegazing. the more you know!

i've seen frank turner live - not because i particularly like him but because a lot of my friends are really into this dude and dragged me along. i should mention that i'm not a big folk fan. to me the stereotype is "let's strum two chords on my acoustic guitar for 10 minutes while i tell this really drawn out tale about the old man who tragically died in a shipwreck" and i just find that shit boring. i get that it's a more lyrics-oriented genre but yeah, generally speaking (of course there are exceptions) it's not for me. this song wasn't the worst folk i've ever heard - they did try to make it more interesting by gradually making it more intense and then finally more quiet again at the end and i appreciated that. but yeah, overall i didn't like this.

the playing was adequate but the song was kinda boring. i'm not a fan of grunting - i can tolerate it when the music is awesome (this is the case with, say, between the buried and me), but when the music isn't that great (like here) grunting annoys me. overall i thought this was pretty bad.
