bane the amulet -
circa survive are great but this isn't one of my faves, felt a bit... weak idk.

snake new skin -
man this is not what i expected of incubus. this is great, i love that main riff. amazing vocals all over the place too.

mycro you will see -
wow i don't like any of this. the ... vocals especially are painful to me, but none of this was enjoyable

cokes dark red -
this was nice to listen to

mcflubbin drew barrymore -
man i like this a lot, her vocals do it for me and the beat is cool

vi (no one knows me) like the piano -
i feel like he's talented and doing some good stuff but not keeping my interest

seg go by richard not by dick -
oh my god this is fuckin rad from the get go. got me jigging in my chair and pretending i can snap my fingers. real fun good good shit. then there's the silence and a buildup and BOOM wow i feel so happy right now this is fantastic. fuck yeah seg. kinda wish it got out of there before the end bit, but the last little flourish is pretty great too

digi for the damaged coda -
yeah echoing everyone's thoughts that this gave me musical blue balls

tera purple rain -
yeah fine i guess. i'd prefer the original and that's not a song i love either. besides that i feel like... i could imagine a orchestral version of this i'd like better than this one. i can't pinpoint what i don't like but there's something.

shad open up wide -
this was.... weird. i don't think i liked it. i'm pretty sure i dont want to listen to it again. but i can see how shad can say it was stuck in his head!

brohan - worse things happen at sea -
i just listened to all these songs in order and boy was i ready to hear someone sing over a guitar by now. i like frank, his voice when he picks it up is so great. he has better songs but this has some high points

go by richard > new skin > worse things happen at sea

Steve Lacy - Dark Red
the word that comes to mind is smooth. not much to say besides a super enjoyable track. for some reason it makes me think of Django Unchained, do with that what you will.
7/10

SZA - Drew Barrymore
love her, love this song. amazing vocals, good lyrics, good music. only thing i dont like is some of the background vocals kinda muddy up the sound at times, but thats a super minor gripe
8/10

Sampha - (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano
very pretty and soulful, but it kind of bored me

London Symphony Orchestra - Purple Rain
meh. no reason for me to listen to this over the original, and i got bored of it rather quickly
4/10

Chase - Open Up Wide
as a trumpeter i can respect the craft. i like the energy; some parts sound like they could fit into a sonic the hedgehog level
6.5/10

Twelve Foot Ninja - Collateral
almost forgot what vocals sounded like ='). i actually like this a lot more than i thought i would; much better vocal performance than i expected out of the singer, and its lyrically strong as well. is this metal? do i like metal yet?

I think I know what you're talking about and I definitely didn't argue since the other person is probably the most pretentious of all B8 music snobs. And music is too subjective to argue about. You either like something or you don't and it's very unlikely that hearing someone else's opinion on it will change yours. But, anyway, I was just joking and you should probably know not to take me seriously by now

Circa Survive - The Amulet (Bane)

I'm not super feeling this. I don't like Anthony Green enough to care about a song that is carried entirely by his clean vocals. I prefer his unclean singing -- there's nothing musically interesting with this song, which is inherently anti-Circa Survive. Just kinda boring tbh. I'd rank it fairly low among Circa Survive tracks.

Incubus - New Skin (Snake)

Incubus makes me sad now with how unquestionably terrible their new stuff is. They released a pseudo-pop EP about making out and stuff ... it really blew. But Incubus is one of my favorite bands, and this is probably one of their top 10 tracks, though not personally in my top five.

Louis Cole - You Will See (Mycro)

This is bad and nothing about it is good. I'd rather drag my dick and balls through 10 yards of broken glass than listen to another second of it.

Steve Lacy - Dark Red (Cokes)

I dig this. I feel like it's missing something but I'm not sure what. I feel like I want it to be either more soulful, or more punk, or more ... something. More in one direction. I enjoyed it a lot though.

SZA - Drew Barrymore (mcflubbin)

I wish the vocal track wasn't so much louder than the rest. Some better mixing (it's possible that YouTube is to blame for this, too) or something would make this a song I love instead of one I merely like. I've heard of SZA but haven't really listened that much. Will give more of it a listen.

Sampha - No One Knows Me Like The Piano (VI)

This is really good, though I really don't like the chorus. I think it's the weakest part of the song and does a disservice to dude's singing.

Organ Freeman - Go by Richard, Not by Dick (Seginus)

I was already familiar with this track before and I just ... like it a lot. I like the breakdowns the most and could listen to a mix of this song that never stops, really.

London Symphony - Purple Rain (Tera)

This is unique, I'll give it that, but I'd rather just listen to the original and don't see myself actively seeking this out.

Chase - Open Up Wide (Shad)

Phew, there's not really anything I like about this, to be honest. It seems competent at what it's going for but I ... don't want to hear any more of it?

Frank Turner - Worse Things Happen At Sea (Brohan)

I love Frank Turner already. This isn't one of my favorite songs of his, but it's good. I do think some of his best songs sound like storytelling, and this is one of them.

Twelve Foot Ninja - Collateral (Steiner)

Is this topic series just going to be Steiner introducing me to bands I've heard of but never listened to? I'm not a huge fan of the vocalist, but he grew on me as the song progressed and I really loved the music. The progression of the song was pretty perfect, loved the intro, this was great.

Blonde Redhead - For the Damaged Coda
Love the progression and buildup and I have to agree it would have been nice to hear it burn a little longer. It feels like a dramatic overture to a bigger piece, but I wouldn't consider teasing a flaw. If anything it just makes me want to check out the band more.

London Symphony Orchestra - Purple Rain
A harmonica lead? Really? I know uploads of Prince's own recordings still get taken down constantly but that doesn't mean I'll settle for some indifferent orchestral cover commissioned to drum up attendance for the next concert season. It sounded like LSO had no love for the song.

Chase - Open Up Wide
Full of frantic energy, has a freewheeling narrative quality like it's scoring a montage from a sped up blaxploitation flick. Totally rad and zany. Those organ chops near the end killed me.

Frank Turner - Worse Things Happen At Sea
He's not wrong. There's drowning, shark attacks, piracy, naval warfare, oil spills, cruise ship hangovers - all worse than heartbreak. I just wish the song were more focused on the former than the latter. A little less "woe is me she slept around" and a little more "thank god I've never had to deal with decompression sickness though". And the yelling was a bit much. The tune didn't sound bad but it's not my style.

Twelve Foot Ninja - Collateral
Damn this is some good shit. Super chunky and catchy, it never strikes me as corny (usually my one hangup with type of stuff) and the guy has a great voice. If there's one specific sub-genre of metal I'm into it's whatever this one is.

New Skin - really solid old school incubus, it's always cool to have more RHCP-like bands. With a bit more nu-metal and less funk.

You Will See- wow if it didn't have that fuckin eletronic background it would be kind of sweet actually. That one thing kind of ruins it a bit although I'm sure there's some sort of musical timing thing that makes you like it mycro

Dark Red- smoooooooooth, honestly first thing I thought when listening to this was "wow this would be a sick sample/beat for rap". I'm down with it.

Drew Barrymore- listened to this album when kendrick was hyping it up when it came out, I like her. This is def one of the highlights of the album. Chorus is undeniable.

No One Knows Me (Like the Piano)- also another album I've listened to earlier in the year, didn't really stick with me but it was pleasant. He has a nice voice, wish song picked up a bit but that's not the point it's going for so as a ballad it's fine.

Go By Richard, Not By Dick- sounds like some theme song to a 70s sitcom, fun. I like the guitar parts going from like halfway into the song

For The Damaged Coda- fine as like an interlude to an album but for being an actual song it did sound like it should have been leading somewhere more and therefore been like a 5+ minute song instead of 2 1/2

Purple Rain- once it gets into it it's pretty fun. Especially like the ending half.

Open Up Wide- another song this week that sounds right at home in a 70's tv sitcom. Of course this one IS from the 70's so that works. It's fine, trumpet has a fun time during it.

Worse Things Happen At Sea- great voice, just a super great acoustic song. Especially when he gets to the yelling parts near the end. His voice has a sort of natural way to draw you in to his lyrics which is really cool.

Collateral- I'm in a weird position where I wish lead singer's voice was different but at the same time it fits? It doesn't stand out enough to me I think is the thing. Instrumentals are pretty good, it's definitely djenty.

Worse Things Happen At Sea > New Skin > Drew Barrymore > Dark Red > Go By Richard, Not By Dick > Collateral > Purple Rain > No One Knows Me (Like The Piano) > Open Up Wide > For the Damaged Coda > You Will See

The Amulet

I like the riffs and instrument work on this song, but I found the vocalist to be kinda lazy. I also thought there was going to be some building up towards the end but ultimately... the last minute or so just felt fizzled. Wasn't one of my faves.

New Skin

Top 5 Incubus Song for me, captures almost all of the good of early Incubus. Heavily Funk Inspired, Hard Rockish, almost a nu metal vibe from it but it stands out enough to do very well. Even the freaking bongos get to me. Damn it now I have to listen to Aqueous Transmission again.

You Will See

Whoa. This was... a trip, to say the least. It's cool but I honestly thought I accidentally ingested shrooms or something

Dark Red

Pretty rad intro, actually really like this song. Pretty simple in construction, melody, and lyrical content, but his voice is pretty good to carry it through. Good pick.

Drew Barrymore

Been catching up on 2017 all month long but this is a great song. Great voice, good melody, all around quality track . As of right now this is probably my top track but I guess I will keep going real quick. And also hits my weak spot instrument wise: the violin. This would probably be my favorite at this point.

(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano

I really like this guy's voice, it's a pretty emotional track too, the whole album is pretty emotional (and dedicated to Sampha's mother) I understand this probably wasn't a good song to nominate from the album for this group though (Seems like everyone prefers more fast paced songs) Still, a lot of the other songs from the album are really good! If you like good R+B/Soul, check it out! Most of the other songs are more production based too, if that's what bothered you!

Halfway through, second half to go.

For the folks saying the Blonde Redhead song should be longer, I totally get that. It's typically accompanied in front by the track "For the Damaged" and that extends its length pretty significantly. I didn't think it was a good idea to ask people to listen to both though.

I've definitely written a few articles with an hour-long mix of the song playing!

Go By Richard (Not By Dick)

Really dig how funky it is. Super fun and enjoyed it a lot. Only real flaw to me was the electric guitar felt a little out of place in the song, but apart from that it was still really cool. Glad to see everybody is bringing their A-Game!

For the Damaged Coda

Before hearing it was from Rick and Morty I was taken by surprise by the song. Cute song but I kinda wish it had a bit more meat to it. May be interested in checking out more by them though!

Purple Rain

Spotify gave me the wrong version D: Harmonica was cute initially but ultimately gave me more of a cheesy "cover song at a restaurant" vibe. The ending made up for it a little but that really set the mood of the song poorly.

Open Up Wide

Good song, trumpets make the song and make it feel like an old school, chase scene to me, then I look and realize the song's name is chase. I think the sax is a little overdone in this song but apart from that, pretty good and actually makes you feel like you panic? Then again I guess that's comparing this song to mycro's when they are pretty different haha. Definitely like this way more than your last week's one!

Worse Things Happen At Sea

Good folkish song, starts to pick up and uses best instrument violin. It picks up more and more as the song goes on too, gives a pretty good feeling of panic.

Collateral

It's a good song and would have been in my wheelhouse a few years ago but apart from the killer bass it's not quite the metal I like to listen to. Good pick though!

Drew Barrymore

Honorable Mentions: New Skin, Open Up Wide, Dark Red, Go By Richard, Not By Dick, Collateral, actually you what I think I kinda liked all of them except for Purple Rain and You Will See (Though for different reasons). Good job team!
