These trainers need to work on providing better incentives for me to fight them, not that I even have a choice. These gardener said he would tell me the true name of a garden, or something like that. That will appeal to almost nobody.

Man, taking advantage of today's youth is in full force. Somebody tricked one into taking a Magikarp. I really feel for the kid. If only I knew what he gave up.

Lumiose City is a bit of a pain to navigate with its different and lackluster camera angle. I slowly worked my way around and received a ton of items, most notably a TM move that will leave any opponent at least one HP. No longer shall I get that dreaded critical hit when trying to capture a Pokemon. Now watch as I don't have an eligible Pokemon.

There's apparently a blackout here, but as far as I can tell, everything is up and running except for public transportation, which I can personally not confirm. If you say so...

Are there more Pokemon that have multiple palette swaps that are meaningless?

*looks at the thousands of videos and stories of shiny hunters*

You have no fucking idea, my friend.

Disregarding shinies though, there's Shellos/Gastrodon, Vivillon (whose coloration is based on where you live irl), and Minior (in Sun/Moon). Then there's Deerling/Sawsbuck which have seasonal variations. There are a couple other Pokemon like Rotom, Wormadam, and Castform with different forms, but that usually comes with a type or stat change.

As soon as Shauna and Serena arrived, the professor wanted me to battle him. I see right through you. You are trying to impress the girls you perv! Having a myriad of types along with me, the battle was a breeze. Holy crap, he's giving me another Pokemon? Since I took Froakie, Squirtle was out. In my copy of Pokemon Blue, I took Bulbasaur, so I decided to go with Charmander. Plus, I wasn't sure if Pansear was going to turn out to be a viable fire type while Budew has been killing it as a grass type. There's also something about a mega stone and mega evolutions. That's new to me, and he didn't really explain anything about it.

There were only three Pokemon, and the guys came late, so I'm guessing Squirtle and Bulbasaur went to Shauna and Serena. I feel like that the game wants me to put Charmander on my core team, but that would mean I would have to break up my current team of unfamiliar Pokemon. I put Charmander back in the box and brought back Pansear. Not that I give a crap about the four other kids, but if the entire game is the five of them basically traveling together from city to city, I think that would be refreshing.

In the lobby of the lab, there's a guy (Lysandre) with hair that resembles an erupting volcano. Such a flamboyant hair style can only mean that he's a gym leader, member of the Elite 4, or a villain. Based on what the Sycamore disciple said about concern over Lysandre's idea of a beautiful world and the revelation in the cafe that he is the head of his own lab, I'd say villain with 99% certainty. First Pokemon game that I've played with a non-Team Rocket villain I think. There was also a movie star with extravagant attire (Diantha I think), and I am 99% sure that she's a gym leader or Elite 4 member.

I paid the price (literally) for not saving since before stepping inside Lumiose City. I found the hairdresser and paid for a short haircut. Apparently, short haircuts are not actually short haircuts, so I had to go back to pay again for a super short haircut. There goes $3000, or five Great Balls.

I should remember to try out Wonder Trade at least once. I don't want to be a dick though and put up complete garbage.

Exploring the city, I wasn't allowed to certain parts of the city. I think that they just have it out for me because I saw plenty of random pedestrians walking into supposedly "restricted" areas. I also found a place called Restaurant Le Nah. Unless I was totally misreading into the host's words, I had to battle for my meal. I felt like I was either underleveled or underprepared, so I left. Another shop sold evolution stones, and the owner had the audacity to call me a famous trainer. Really desperate for sales are we? A clothing store said that I wasn't stylish enough to shop there. I hope their lack of realization of the catch-22 puts them out of business.

Leaving the city, I was stopped by someone who mentioned something about O-Powers. These have apparently been there the whole game. They didn't seem to have much of a point, but what do I know?

Out on Route 6(?), I was immediately stopped by a Lucario. I vaguely remember that from Brawl. I guess my Riolu will turn into that in the near futu...what the fuck kind of helmet is that skater wearing? With a bizarre design like that, it came as no surprise when she told me that she was a gym leader. Korrina of Shalour City Gym. I will hopefully remember that she uses Lucario and presumably other fighting Pokemon.

I feel like I am spending more time trying to catch Pokemon than fighting. I nabbed a Doduo, Furfrou, Pancham, Skiddo, Gulpin, and then had the bizarre encounters of facing five Scraggies (caught one) and four Plusle and one Minun (caught the Minun). Those large battles can be obnoxious because the Scraggies spammed Sand Attack, and the Plusle+Minun paralyzed me right off the bat.

I faced my first 2-on-2 battle. I don't remember those being a thing. It was nothing special, but I wouldn't mind there being more of them. I later met up with Tierno and that other guy. I was only half-joking back in Aquacorde when I said that Tierno might have a perpetually open mouth because his lips were definitely not large large here. I guess he might have some rare condition.

Almost immediately after facing Tierno, I met up with Rising Star Hamish. I thought it was a made-up name, but it apparently is a real name of English origin that people give their children. I'm sure they got picked on at school.

I came across an Oran Berry. I remember berries from G/S/C, but I don't recall what they are used for or if I even used them much.

There were two skaters who somehow could skate on grass without incident. One said the two rules of battle are 1. Battle and 2. Win. He's going places. Another had an Oddish and it spewed acid? What kind of mutant plant did it turn into in these past 15 years?

I made it to Camphrier Town. This old man at the entrance might be the first character that I have met that hasn't talked about something Pokemon, and I've talked to a lot of characters thus far. This is assuming that the lazy lug in "That lazy lug'll be back soon" is referring to a human. Camphrier seems like a quaint little town at first, but the first building I entered housed women who wear pink, crinkled paper as a form of hair extensions. This town is just as crazy as the rest of them!

Inside of the clinic/store combo, I met a nickname rater. He inspected the name of a Pokemon that I never renamed. He told me that it sounded good. I have made it a priority to call the people that authorized his title and have it revoked.

So far, Flabebe has been a disappointment, and since I have become aware that I knew of the Pokemon that Riolu will evolve into prior to playing the game, I am considering swapping them both out for Scraggy and Pancham. Both have fighting types, but Scraggy is a Dark/Fighting combo, so he gets priority if I do take the plunge.

I did end up switching Riolu and Flabebe with Pancham and Scraggy.

People are really pushy and have oppressive legal powers in Kalos. I can't leave X city until I go to Y place for I think the third or fourth time. Putting in Scraggly paid off immediate dividends. I got my choice of five berries because I had a Dark type on me. Unfortunately, all the berry names were gibberish to me, so I went with a random pick of the Rawst Berry. Going to the dumb castle though, the guide said he hasn't remembered when it has had so many visitors. There were two of us. Kill me.

Our guide was interrupted before it really began as something went down on Route 7. I presume that is the next route. It probably has something to do with that "lazy lug" to old man was talking about. My heart will break if it's a Pokemon...it's a fucking Snorlax isn't it, or whatever the Kalos equivalent is?

I got roped into planting berries, somehow.I made some Boost and Surprise Mulch. I planted a Rawst, Pencha, and Oran Berry. I have a feeling this will be a waste of time. After hearing about how the trees will wither or bug Pokemon can ruin harvests, I know for certain that I just wasted my time. That family didn't even have a Pokemon, so I am not surprised that they only have like four trees in that giant plot.

It was a Snorlax! Dammit, that old man was talking about a Pokemon! Luckily, I had conversations with people about berries and castles, so he's off the hook. I see a Merril and some other Pokemon off in the distance. They also seem to enjoy beach balls in non-beach settings. They should meet with my Rhyhorn.

Going to this Parfum Palace (snobs alert), I caught a lot of Pokemon: Venipede, Escpurr, Sentret, Oddish, and Nincada. I immediately subsituted Espurr in for Scraggy because Psychic type (and it's a cat).

I decided to go through the tall grass before the Palace, and I have to say, what possessed these people into thinking it is acceptable to just fucking hide in tall grass all day waiting to ambush the one or two people who might stroll by?. Is this how you dreamt you would spend your life? You would be better off having a gun or knife and rob people then. To make things even more hilarious, there was a trainer there carrying a bag of groceries who said that she spends a life of standing in the tall grass all day to, and I quote, "be like a Pokemon." What insane asylum did she escape from?

These nut jobs though all gave me money and more importantly, my Combee evolved into a giant-ass queen bee called Vespiquen. As I approached the Palace gates, a woman handed me a berry. Her words that preceded the gift made it abundantly clear that she was not used to talking to people. Perhaps nobody wants to visit the palace anymore due to all the crazies that its tall grasses attract.

I have to pay money to enter this place? I already hate it. Being forced to find some dog and listen to terrible jokes ensures that this was totally $1000 (I know that's not the currency) well spent. I was also asked if I wanted to tip a minstrel. Why would I want to do that?

I decided to get my money's worth and loot the place. There was an item called an Amulet Coin that grants me double money in battle. I slapped it on Frogadier and wait to be paid handsomely while worrying less about paying for Poke Balls, haircuts, and going into palaces. Potentially even better was getting my first HM, Cut. Unfortunately, I can't fly yet and didn't exactly record all the places where I saw trees blocking items or paths to something. I'm sure there's an online guide for that.

That Furfrou wouldn't have gone so far if the doors weren't motion sensor! Technology strikes again! I am a bit saddened to admit that it took me a couple attempts to corner Furfrou. The owner said that he would shoot off fireworks for us and to go to the balcony. I should have realized sooner that he is the one who bought the palace.

"I've never watched fireworks with a boy before" - Shauna
Oh, so we're doing that now. Also, they're just fireworks that are also being shot off during the day. There's nothing special about this moment unless there's something lost in translation relating to culture. Whatever the case, I got my flute. I will say that the palace made the one in Camphrier look like a pile of puke.

I was afraid that I would have to fight Snorlax. I remember it being a pain in R/B/Y. It surprisingly wasn't near like that fight, but I still wasted a few Poke Balls (how does an Ultra Ball not work on a Lv 15 Snorlax whose health was in the red?). After the fight, Shauna told me to check out the place with the beach ball and Marill. When I did, she was nowhere to be seen while Tierno and the other guy showed up. It was kind of odd that they never really explained what the Day Care specifically did and how their entire operation works. It's even more puzzling since they sounded like this was the place to go for breeding.

On another Pokemon-catching spree, I nabbed a Ducklett, Swirlix, Volbeat, Croagunk, and Roselia. In the fight in which I caught Roselia, my Budew evolved into...Roselia... I did not see that coming. They are both different genders, so I decided to keep the one I just caught. I did however swap Espurr out for Swirlix.

I took this time to randomly check on my trees. They already grew berries! Maybe these aren't a complete waste of time after all. Some lady stopped me and barged into the orchard family's house because I had mutated berries.

I don't think I ever grew berries in XY.

Venipede is a personal favorite of mine. It came out in gen 5, when the Bug type was finally given some love. Its evolution Scolipede is my favorite bug type. I've never used a Vespiquen though. Maybe on a future playthrough.

It's kinda weird how XY has so many random people that want to be tipped. Like... ugh. But its easy to get money in this game. In fact, you're at the place where you can fight a bunch of rich guys every day*. It's the mansion on the same route as the day care (I only remember this because I spent A LOT of time riding the bike along that route to hatch eggs). Slap your Amulet Coin on a Pokemon and rack in the dough

In the fight in which I caught Roselia, my Budew evolved into...Roselia... I did not see that coming

XD I had something similar happen. Roselia is from Gen 3, but Budew and Roserade are Gen 4. I used a Roselia in Gen 3 and liked it. Then when I played Gen 4, I found Budew not realizing it was a pre-evo of Roselia, so I was pleasantly surprised when it evolved. Also, Budew is a friendship evolution, so that means your Budew loves you! Good job on being a nice trainer!

*I don't think it's every day as in a 24 hour period. Like the O-powers charging, I think it shuffles rich trainers around on some schedule, but I'm not sure of the details.

Venturing past the orchard, I caught an Illumise and a Smeagle. We do not need to go into details how many times I caused a Smeagle to faint before catching one. Before long, Serena popped up out of nowhere (Shauna's abrupt absence is starting to scare me given how predatory adults are in this world) and we had a 2-on-2 battle with her and I against Tierno and Trevor (I will soon forget that latter's name yet again). I was the only one with an evolved Pokemon at the start. Serena's Fletching was KO'd almost immediately, and whatever she threw out looked like her starter's evolved form. What kind of idiot starts out with a 6 oz bird when you have this 100 lb-looking cactus/rodent combo? Being an adult playing as kid who travels with kids is nerve-racking.

After that, I came to that Battle Chateau that people talked about earlier in the topic. I'm a Baron I guess. It was now that it donned on me that it's been so long since I fought a gym battle (someone did say that half the game is practically between the first and second gym battle) because I didn't recognize Viola. I just ended up fighting people who mostly had just one Pokemon, received mega cash from the Amulet Coin, and became a Viscount.

Looking at stats, for whatever reason, I realized that I don't exactly know what special attacks are in relation to special attack/defense. Is it just out-of-element moves? Like, Frogadier is a Water type, so ordinary attacks to it should be all the water and normal moves but special attacks would be like Lick (Ghost) and whatever else it can use that is of other types?

I came to a cave with the name Zubat Roost. Gee I wonder what Pokemon I will find here. I took four steps and was predictably met with a Zubat. I caught that and seconds later found out how small of a cave it was. I did see a stone slab with a conveniently similar-shaped hole nearby, but I didn't think that I could do anything about it at the moment.

Special or physical is determined on a per move basis. When you look at the status screen, each move should have an icon next to it (you might have to click a button to check them maybe, I don't recall). A red icon with a star-ish thing is physical, a blue-ish icon with a circlular thingy is special. So something like Lick is physical, but the also-ghost type Shadow Ball is special. Most water attacks are special, most of the other stuff Froakie has early on is physical.

Every move is classified as either physical or special. Like, Bite and Body Slam are physical (so damage is based on attack/defense). Water Gun is special (and based on special attack & special defense). It's always the same no matter what pokemon has the move.

For as technologically-advanced this region is to keep up and to appeal with the youth from the real-life world, I was surprised to be told that I needed an expansion for the Pokedex. Why not just have a fully-functioning Pokedex from the start?

I am one of those players who likes to explore my surroundings before proceeding with the main path. I think that I messed up in what I assumed was the "main path." I went south of the Route 8 sign thinking the way to go was either west or east, but the path kept continuing south. During this time, I caught a Driftloon, Inkay, Absol, and Spoink. Absol was by far the hardest Pokemon to catch up to this point. An Ultra Ball (my only one!) was still not enough to catch a paralyzed Absol with 1 HP. I had to use a Timer Ball. Also what irked me in this fight (I think it was against Absol) was that I had Pancham hold a Quick Claw, which allows him to attack first when it activates. It activated but lost out to a Quick Attack. WHAT IS THE POINT OF HAVING IT THEN?

I also see a lot of trainers below me. Once I figure out how to reach them, rest assured I will take their money. I eventually found my way to Ambette Town. Serena went on about fossils. She clearly knows more about this world than my guy does. I know he just moved into Vaniville, but I forgot if they mentioned if he was new to the region as a whole. Otherwise, he probably has a learning disability for all non-violent things. I swapped out Swirlix, who was a decent #6 Pokemon for Inkay here.

I was planning on doing a Pokemon update when I got my next badge, but I don't know when that will be:
Lv 29 Frogadier
Lv 24 Vespiquen
Lv 24 Roselia
Lv 22 Pansear
Lv 20 Pancham
Lv 14 Inkay

If both Pokemon use a "goes first" attack, the faster one goes first. Quick Claw basically makes any move Quick Attack when it's activated. Absol being faster than Pancham will still let it go first in that situation, but not if it used any move that doesn't always go first.

I remembered that my Bug Badge only allows Pokemon up to Lv 30 to obey me. I have no idea the odds that a Lv 31+ will not obey me, but I decided not to take that chance once I discovered there was no gym here in Ambette Town, and I had to go find some assistant in one Glittering Cave. I swapped out Frogadier for Ducklett. I also made Panser the lead Pokemon and hold the Amulet Coin.

In one of the houses, I found a woman who was fascinated with speedy Pokemon. I looked up the speed of my Pokemon and found out that they are all slow as fuck (after subbing out Frogadier). A woman at the hotel claimed to be on vacation but was wearing an outfit similar to the staff you find in other hotels. I decided it was best to avoid her for the rest of my journey. I keep forgetting about using O-Powers! I must remember to use the one for capturing Pokemon so that I can avoid another Absol/Snorlax situation. A random guy gave me an Old Rod at the aquarium.

I finally got to ride a Rhyhorn, and that was one giant letdown. These things apparently race, but mine only had one speed: Molasses. Add in random encounters anywhere, and my enthusasium went all the way to zero fast. I did catch a Hippopotus, Helioptile, and Sandile. I also realized much later than I should that I could manually dismount from the Rhyhorn. Unfortunately, rocks are a rollerskater's arch nemesis, so I couldn't ditch the Rhyhorn completely and move at my own pace. I also had a sky battle since Vespiquen was eligible. It was tougher than it had any right to be since confusion likely tripled to amount of turns it would normally take.

After the battle, Vespiquen learned a new move, and I regretted having her learn Cut so soon. I hope there's a way to forget an HM at some point (I would like to have an HM sponge eventually) because my Vespiquen no longer has any flying moves. I entered Glittering Cave, and this was a lot different than Zubat Roost. I caught a Machop, Kangaskhan, and Cubone. I would have caught Solrock and I want to say Lunastone, but they were harder to catch than Absol or Snorlax. I really need the shops to have better Poke Ball offerings because I can't see what more I can do than knocking a Pokemon to 1 HP and have it asleep or paralyzed.

As an aside, I see that Cubone wears the skull of its dead mother. We can rule out all Cubone mothers dying at childbirth since they all lay eggs, so I'm inclined to call BS on that.

I will look into my current movesets for special/physical, but I imagine that most are pretty obvious based on the names.

Also, I had a giant update, but my laptop just died, so it will have to wait until tomorrow. I won't play any more in the meantime to show how much I progressed over the weekend.

That not obeying stuff only matters for Pokemon you get in trades. Things you catch yourself will always obey regardless of level or badges.

Did they simply not mention that or did I overlook that in some in-game text?

It's been a long time since I've actually paid attention to the wording but I believe they don't tell you that and imply that the restriction applies to all Pokemon when it doesn't.

Yeah, I don't think any game has clarified that it meant traded Pokemon only. I recall having the same worries as you back in RBY. My first playthrough was a sad affair. I only leveled up my Charmander, so I had a Charizard by the time I was at the fourth gym leader. I was worried my Charizard would disobey me (also compounded by the anime featuring a disobedient Charizard), but it never did.

whoa I didn't know that

like KCF, I always thought you had to be careful not to overlevel your own pokemon

You don't really need any particular ball to catch any particular pokemon. Your capture chance is something like b*s*r*(1-2*current_hp/(3*max_hp))/255, where b is a ball modifier (1 for pokeballs, 1.5 for great balls, 2 for ultra balls, and greater than 2 for special balls if their condition is met; I find the most useful to be quick/dusk balls), s is a status mutliplier (iirc paralysis is 1.5, sleep is 2), and b is some base rate that depends on the particular pokemon species. If that formula gives you a number greater than 1 you're guaranteed to capture the pokemon.

Female

Nice! Espurr looks different on evolution depending on gender and I slightly prefer the female.

The female also has a much better level up learnset with lots of type coverage.

At the end of the cave, I met up with a guy all decked in red. He called himself fashionable and belongs to team Flare. I didn't know word play extended to anything beyond Pokemon themselves. He said something about Team Flare trying to make people happy or some nonsense. I truly don't give a shit. Before long, Serena randomly showed up for a 2-on-2 battle. She was garbage and lost a Pokemon on three consecutive turns.

Why I had to carry her ass soon became clear. I had a choice between two fossils after finding the missing assistant. Jaw or Sail? Sail sounds like a water type, and I already have a water main. Jaws sounds powerful, but it could just have a more attention-grabbing buzzword and ultimately be a letdown. I ended up taking that Sail fossil. It became Amaura and is a rock and ice type! I totally feel vindicated. Out is Ducklett. In is Amaura.

Oh, so the Rhyhorn was a former racer. I can see why it retired (or was forced to. I received something called Aerodactylite, but I'm not sure they explained what it was. I did catch that I needed Old Amber too. As I left town, I went crazy with the Old Rod, only to encounter exclusively Luvdisc, which I caught the first one I faced.

Moving along the beach, I am puzzled how my rollerskates act like every surface is the same except for rocks. I see a bunch of sparkling spots around the deep and shallow water. I am not surprised that I can't do anything about the former, but how can I stand over the latter and not do anything? Dousing rod doesn't have any affect on that, but I did grab a bunch of other nice goodies from it.

Amaura is decent, despite just how many weaknesses Rock/Ice has, but the Jaw Fossil yields something far better.

Through accident, I found out that I can use my only Fire Stone on Pansear. It is typically best to wait awhile to evolve a Pokemon or is it better to evolve early because better stat increases or something with higher evolved forms?

I found my way to Cyllage City. There was a cafe that made me pay just to sit. Like the place in Lumiose City, I gave it a hard pass. Working my way around the city in no certain fashion, I was stopped to be told that I "missed" out on a bicycle race and received an HM (Strength maybe?). He (Grant) is apparently the gym leader and nobody has had the heart to tell him that he has candy or gum in his hair.

Because I have only found Luvdisc with my fishing rod, I decided to trade one for some citizen's Steelix and immediately caught another. I have no idea if there's any benefit to completing those in-game trades. I answered some dumb question and received a yellow bicycle. To complete my exploration, I ventured into a cave that I could barely do anything in and caught a Meditite.

I swapped out Inkay for Frogadier and entered the gym. It's a giant rock-climbing wall, which leads me to believe that the so-called candy is actually those little rock-climbing nubs and Grant wears them as hair accessories. The fashion in Kalos is so ridiculous that I am at a loss for words.
