I've heard this argued or talked about before, do you personally think most of them were?

'Insane' is a word that doesn't really have a concrete enough meaning to answer this question.

Yes they were insane because they thought that by killing people they would make it into heaven.

i heard that a small percentage of them were just very mad at america's policies and really didn't believe that stuff, not sure if it's true or not.

It'd be good if you could define insane, cause as someone mentioned, it's not a word that has a concrete meaning and everyone could technically be considered insane.

what about insane as it is defined by the courts or a legal standard? Maybe when somebody tries to claim the insanity defense

They were probably not legally insane, as they managed to pull off the attack with extreme premeditation and not screw it up for the most part. But Imo they were all brainwashed and completely mad. If you want to make a statement, do it peacefully otherwise the world will see you as a monster.

Insane by what standard?

To me, anyone who fervently believes in an organized religion is insane, so yes.

But many people not only disagree with that sentiment, but will be triggered just by being "assaulted" by having to experience my conflicting viewpoint. If you think believing in sky fairies is sane, there's absolutely nothing insane about what they did. They waged jihad and are going to heaven to collect their six dozen virgins, says so right there in their book of fables...I mean...facts.

If they willingly committed themselves to years of preparation and training just to die in a violent flaming explosion due to disgruntlement with our foreign policy and WEREN'T expecting rewards in the after life, then they're even more insane.

No.

I mean, phrase this another way - if they were attacked and subdued before conducting the attacks and the planes were all safely landed and they were put on trial, do you think they would plead insanity? Do you think that plea would be accepted by anyone?

Almost assuredly not. None of them suffered from mental illness, so far as we know, so they're not insane - evil, but not insane.

Not insane, but not of their right mind. Terrorist cells are like cults. They separate you from everybody you know to cultivate your mindset into doing something insane.

I feel the same way about anybody who believes in extreme politics, especially socialist ones.

They had a distorted mindset, but they still recognized reality. The concept is somewhat akin to abnormality vs insanity.
