His opinion isn't the most accepted one. You can go to any concert with lyrics of that type and see hundreds of white people there with black people singing along.

It is the intent that matters. Pewdewpie's intent was to use it as an insulting term while not even knowing if the other side could possibly in fact be an african-american. It was super poor usage and very offensive.

I think idra lost sponsors for less of I am remembering correctly.

I personally don't. I believe that those who have historically been affected by the word do. There obviously won't be a unanimous consensus, but ask every black person you come across "what do you think of white people using the n word" and I'm willing yup bet that very few of them will be fine with it.

There is a few diff camps. One where those words are the exact same. One where a and er are different. One where it should be said by no one whether white or black. One where whites should not be allowed to say it while everyone else is allowed to freely.

Personally, I only care about intent. If you are using it as an insult, it is pretty clear cut what the intent was.

If quoting in text, I'm sure there's a proper way to handle it for academic papers. I'm not certain what the best answer here is, but i think that using the full word is acceptable. When on genius.com, for instance, I'd fully expect it to be written out.

When quoting in spoken speech, it gets even trickier. There aren't easy answers. But if it's a quote from a song, either silent pause for a moment or just saying "n" is probably the least offensive. I'm not an expert, and i might have overstepped by saying "never", but I do believe that 99999 times out of 100000, it is inappropriate for a non-black person to use.

Some people are making a big deal of it, specifically the Firewatch developers who want to get his videos playing their game taken down. That's actually what I expected Vlado would make a topic about.

This is an extremely faulty conclusion to draw. It very may well be true, and the video is REALLY bad -- he deserves any flack he gets for it. End of the day the personal responsibility to use the word is solely on him. That said, words enter peoples vocabularies completely subconsciously all the time, it's human nature. We're sponges. Being aware of your behavior/actions and trying to mitigate it is all you can really ask of people.

I used to use the word, albeit infrequently, in common speech without even thinking about it. You start hanging out with people who use the word, white or black, or just expose yourself to the use of it with any sort of frequency and the tendency for it to slip in is real, especially, I think, if you have no real hatred/racism charged behind the word, coupled with a total lack of racial guilt/comfort with those of other races.

I've had multiple instances where I've been in a room where the word is being used, with many black people, where it's come out of my mouth without a single thought. Always felt a tinge of shame upon realizing what I'd said, but also many times been completely unaware that it even came out of my mouth. It's a deeper issue than you're making it out to be I think.

That said pdp is a douche, and again, responsibility is solely on him, especially with the platform he has, to regulate himself. He's got everything that's coming to him, but I don't think it inherently makes him a horrible racist (even though he very may well be).

For a random person not from the culture the slur originates from, there's some benefit of the doubt they don't understand the strength or history of the word. I certainly don't know the strength of every UK slur
