Are you bothered by white-washing of characters that are meant to be Asian in movies?

Lionsgate Reboot of Hellboy is already stirring up controversy before it even starts as British actor, Ed Skrein, a white man was cast as Ben Daimio in Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen...the only problem is, the character is a JAPANESE-AMERICAN and his heritage was the central point of the character's backstory!!

Daimio's grandmother was a Japanese imperial assassin in WW2 and so the casting of a japanese actor, or even asian actor for that matter was imperative

Many obected to the role not going to an asianamerican actor and called it another example of Hollywood "whitewashing" asian characters

Cindy Chu said "I guess they want this to fail"

Stephanie Sheh said "Here we go again. Why Hollywood do you keep forcing me to boycott your films?"

Lionsgate has not responded to the outrage but this isn't the first time Hollywood was accused of whitewashing asian characters

Emma Stone's casting as a half-Hawaiian, half-Chinese character in Sony's "Aloha" created controversy which ultimately bombed.

Scarlett Johansson's part as a cyborg protagonist as a Japanese anime remake of Paramount's Ghost in the shell also caused outrage and it too bombed.

Netflix release of Japanese manga adaptation Death Note drew outrage when it transferred a japanese story to Seattle without any asian actors.

Studies have shown that diverse casts often lead to better box office returns and yet the top 100 films of 2015 contained not one leading role for an Asian-American. This has lead to frustration for many prominent Asian-American actors

Are you bothered by white-washing of asian characters is outrageous?.

Normally I don't care too much if the character's origin doesn't require it or it's incidental to the plot that argument doesn't work here. GitS was about a new shell for an existing brain and not every body that Motoko has used in the Manga (or even the Anime movies/series) has been Asian. Casting Emma Stone in Aloha was just foolish and the movie was terrible anyway so that should have been a lesson for them. Skrein was really good in Kill your friends (not so much in Transporter but those are trashy action anyway) so I get why they'd want to use him but this isn't the right call.

Yes and no. It would be nice if the producers stay true to the source material but at the same time, they're doing it for the money and not necessarily for the fans.

As for Ghost in the Shell, I think they are able to get away with using a Caucasian actress due to the nature of the lore. Motoko herself is just using a "suit"

By that logic, all acting casting is discriminatory and all acting establishments need to be shut down for hate crimes.

If a character is Asian then the most qualified actor would be Asian, if a character is short then the most qualified actor would be short too. Choosing to not use a more qualified actor because of his racial characteristics (which suit the role) is blatantly racist.

If it's a half-white character, casting an all-white actor is less of an issue than replacing a 100% minority actor *unless* the character looks completely like the other race (ie, Barack Obama). As a general rule, I hate these kinds of casting changes -- whether it's turning Motoko white or L black -- but I don't really know this character and, again, he's half-white anyway so I have less of a problem.

L should have been Asian, tbh. It would be a reverse-Othello.

Most of those so-called "studies" are fictitious. Plus you don't have *that* many A-list Asian actors (although that's partly due to Asians getting fewer roles, but still, there are enough Asians getting roles that the number of A-listers should be higher)

Would they blackface the whole cast? Then I would see it as a parody.
White people doing black stereotypes? I would see it as a parody.
Changing the script to remove the black requirements? If the show is good enough, then I would see it.

Also, that really makes the people who complain about non-white people playing characters who were white in the source material in western film adaptations look terrible by comparison.

They'd say they're black, say they got their powers from their black parents (played by white people) and complain about oppression by those whities (played by chinese guys cuz reasons). Basically they just pretend they're black despite the obvious flaw in the casting.

the Nick Fury thing pisses me off the most of any of these changes. Because it completly changes the character. Black Nick Fury isn't just Nick Fury with black skin. He's a totally different person. original Nick Fury fought in WW2. he's from the same generation as Cap. He took a lesser version of a Super Soldier serum and it slowed down his aging. the black version is just a normal person who joined SHIELD. he's not from WW2. it takes away one of the coolest parts of the character. A guy who fought in WW2 and slowed down his aging is better than "black super spy from modern day"

I wouldn't be nearly as angry about it, if they had kept the WW2 part and just made him black. but they didn't.

a similar thing happened to native americans in the movie 30 Days of Night. it's set in Barrow Alaska (they changed the name now to something else but I forget. it's in native language. starts with a U)

but all the characters are white. in real life, there like supposedly maybe 5 white people in the whole town. in the movie, everyone is white except for some Extras seen in the beginning of the movie, who never even have spoken lines.
