Is it just a necessary part of the human condition? Is it something we all must live with and attempts to weed it out of our psyche or pass it off as something to be excised from society a fruitless endeavor?

Besides being unavoidable, it's likely necessary to promote competition and as a homogenizing element. Societies need a certain amount of homogeny to function and, broadly speaking, hate is usually directed towards individuals who don't fit a mold of some sort associated with societal standards.
