I can't remember where it was because the campaign was a billion years ago, but some city had a natural disaster and Obama and Hillary both wanted to visit but were told by the mayor of the city "don't show up right now, shit is a mess and having to guarantee your safety would stretch our resources beyond the breaking point".

Trump got the same message and showed up anyway.

There's only one real point of contention that's viable from that and that is not all alt righters are Nazis, which is probably true, but if you go to a rally and see the rally is being propped up by Nazis and Klans if you don't leave immediately or better yet condemn them you're as good as condoning them within your group. At which point there's no contention at all, and unless I missed something I didn't see a lot of people turning up for the rally and then getting the fuck outta dodge, or condemning it on social media until after shit hit the fan. Not good enough.

This is one of the most disappointing things about people who defend the Confederate flag: I don't see the fans of it I know in my life condemning it being waived with Nazi flags. What better chance to say it's not a symbol of racism, that it's been hijacked, that good people have them, that it's being misused and there are believers in it who are unhappy about it...and yet I see nothing.

Facebook echo chamber probably plays a part in that, but also I don't see it in the media either. The Confederacy must leave the public spaces. You cannot talk about the flag without talking white supremacy -- never again, and it's been true for years before this.

First, it's important to note that most counterprotestors were peaceful (i.e. It's not nazis vs extremists on the left, it's nazis vs normal people that oppose nazis and also there are a few violent assholes showing up)

Second, any criticism of this violence on "the other side" needs to avoid either explicitly or implicitly letting the nazis off the hook. In fact, they share a sizable portion of the blame. A violent response to their hateful message and actions is extremely predictable.

That said, any tenuous defense someone may have for violence goes out the window when you're attacking unrelated parties. I'm glad they arrested the dude and hope the Nazis and their apologists aren't able to successfully use him to deflect criticism from themselves.

(he was Lees second in command the entire war and only like one statue of him exists. Its at Gettysburg and was erected in the early 2000s mainly because Tom Berenger was really badass as Longstreet in the 1993.


He was also a Republican and was completelu excised from the Lost Cause version of history.
