Apocalypse Now

Reservoir Dogs

Taxi Driver

The Matrix

The Passion

Lawrence of Arabia

Easy Rider

Midnight Cowboy

Star Wars (I include New Hope and Empire. I'd be happy to defend this if anyone disagrees)

I'll disagree with TC and include Alien on this list. Again, I'd be happy to debate.

Witness (probably the least-known example that'll be posted here. It's a masterpiece in the sense of how well-made and well-written it is, even though it's not even close to being anywhere near my all-time favorites list)

Children of Men

The Revenant

Babel

Children of Men

I hated that movie. It was boring, dreary garbage through and through. It was so utterly pointless that I didn't even care by the time the credits started rolling.

Anyway, I'd say The Godfather, Psycho, and Goodfellas are some of my favorites, but I don't know how one defines a Masterpiece, honestly.

I personally disagree, but different strokes, right?

It doesn't help that I find Clive Owen to be a sub-par actor most of the time, and I was bored out of my mind through most of it. I didn't find it to inspiring or hopeful, either. The storyline was meh to me as well, it seemed like a dystopian retelling of some pretty standard plot points. The continuous shot was impressive, but that's about it.

If it's "I really didn't like the setting/tone so I checked out and didn't enjoy it" then it's like I get that, but like if you were open to the movie and really took in what it had to offer I struggle a bit imagining somebody thinking that it was as a movie subpar or meh.

I mean, what's to 'get'? I didn't like it. I thought it was a boring, cliche ridden, snorefest with one good scene and a whole lot of crap acting. The characters were wooden and two dimensional, as well. I didn't like the themes, the setting, the acting, the tone, or any of it.

But that doesn't mean it's bad in the greater scheme of things. It means that I felt it was a subpar movie, and that's okay because that is how opinions work.

That's mostly how opinions work. I think in a more ideal world people can agree that X is good or bad but didn't resonant with them. I think that's particularly the goal with "masterpieces".

But I think Citizen Kane is only remarkable in it's historical context and isn't actually that great a movie, so maybe I should bite my tongue. idk

I'm not going to tell you how to feel, I just wish you could see the movie as I see it, because when I see it, it's great and very much does not have the faults you say.
