i figured i could have some switch discussion since i finally got a switch last week, ok?

holy hell, you can't have a straight conversation with these people unless you agree the switch is the greatest console ever, and has already surpassed the library of every nintendo console before it.

i suggested the switch had the potential of being a better console than the wii u in terms of games, and was informed immediately that it has already surpassed the wii u with its current lineup of games.

I would think reinforcing a memory for a decade would mean you wouldn't really need to back it up.

Wouldn't surprise me. With the growing number of titles going multiplat (a trend that really took off last gen), people are increasingly desperate to find reasons to consider their systems worthwhile, which means they'll be more aggressive in defending those reasons.

Nintendo hasn't gotten a significant amount of 3rd party games for over 20 years. You buy Nintendo consoles for 1st and 2nd party games. If a 3rd party game comes out on it, great. If not, well no shit get a PC, PS4, or XBox One and accept reality.

The Gamecube actually had pretty good 3rd party support(Beyond Good and Evil, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat Deception, Resident Evil REmake, Resident Evil 4, etc.). In fact, many of the Resident Evil games on the Gamecube, RE1 Remake, RE0 and RE4 were originally gonna be Nintendo Gamecube exclusives until they were all later ported to PC and PS and Xbox consoles(PS3, X360, Xbone, PS4, and PC), . Hell, even the original Wii had plenty of 3rd party support. It just so happens that the Wii didn't get the 3rd party support that gamers wanted(no GTA IV, no Bioshock, no Assassin's Creed, etc.) or that the Gamecube's 3rd party support wasn't quite strong enough since it never had a GTA game or main entry Final Fantasy game.

These days, "third-party" almost always means "multiplat," which is why expecting such games on Nintendo systems is pretty silly. Nintendo's gone in a different direction from the other systems, which makes porting other systems' games to Nintendo's systems more trouble than it's typically worth. I'm perfectly happy with that paradigm, since I've already got a PC and can therefore consider every traditional console since 2005 to be oboslete, but it does mean that people holding out for a huge third-party library on the Switch are going to be disappointed.

That said, the DS and 3DS saw incredible third-party exclusive support, so if the Switch gets enough of an install base and ends up taking over Nintendo's portable market like everyone's expecting it to, we may get some of that after all. Probably not to the same level, though, because the expectation is going to be for higher-budget games that take advantage of the system's power, and that's going to promote focusing on multiplat releases instead.

I should pay more attention. For some reason I thought he quoted the "better library than every nintendo console before it" line, rather than a subsequent, less-hyperbolic one. My mistake.

That said, I could see people making that claim if they include the upcoming lineup. I'd disagree, because I feel the WiiU's library was a lot better than many people gave it credit for, but I'd consider it a valid enough opinion. There's some pretty fun-looking stuff coming down the pipes.

People tend to discount the Wii's third-party support. In general, people are rather bad at remembering the distinction between "this system has nothing" and "this system has nothing I like."

Not really. I've been on the Switch board fairly long enough and it's mostly the other way around. People are already dismissing the Switch as "Nintendoomed" despite, being only around for about 5 months and with all the console shortage issues and all.

Pretty much. Many of the Wii's 3rd party games aren't even bad. It had Scarface: The World Is Yours, The Godfather, Bully: Scholarship Edition, Resident Evil 4, Manhunt 2 and Mortal Kombat Armageddon. It just so happens that a lot of the good 3rd party Wii games were overlooked due to many 3rd party shovelware games it's been receiving for a while, which is funny since the PS2 also had a lot of shovelware games, especially in it's later lifespan, yet no one bats an eye on the PS2 for having them.

I've only ever been part of very few boards other than PotD. Most of them were game specific boards. Actually, I'm pretty sure it was only Tree of Tranquility and Diablo 3, before D3 was released. Both of those boards were actually pretty nice.
