Lately I've just had very little to no taste for meat at all, and there are a lot of high-quality alternatives to things like dairy products and eggs these days. There's never been an easier time to do it.

I think the biggest challenge would be adopting more veggies, I have never been wild about those, but I'm sure I could learn.

I think I may start with just heavily reducing my use of animal products, which I've kind of already been doing anyway. Just replacing dairy products and eggs alone is incredibly easy nowadays. And plus I really don't eat beef anymore, and that probably does more damage than any other meat product.

Seriously though it's really good for your health given you get all your vitamins. It's virtually impossible to be overweight on a vegan diet.

If you do, don't take vitamin supplements, because there are some dietary things you're missing out on.

Personally though, going vegan seems hard, mostly because shopping must be an unbelievable pain in the ass the while figuring out what to get.

My mom's really into supplements, I've never found them necessary personally, it seems easier to just incorporate those vitamins into what you're eating already.

Yeah, it can be a pain to read labels and such but it's a habit you get into. And a growing number of items are explicitly labelled vegan as well. You can find lists online too.

Just wondering; is there any moral reason against milk and eggs as long as the cows and chickens are treated humanely and not ultimately slaughtered? Of course, most milk and eggs you get in the supermarket probably don't meet that condition.

Milk supports veal and the beef industry, and poor treatment of milking cows. Eggs supports massive chicken slaughter and inhumane conditions. You will not find anything humane like that at a grocer.

Even so, it's still taking another creature's life (or causing them to suffer) for your pleasure, ultimately.

Anyway Kana if you want some resources I'd be happy to send them to you. I've found so far it's not too difficult, but it is significantly less convenient to have to read every label.

you should be supplementing B12, you can't get it without animal products unless you're eating some really dirty produce. I personally am chronically deficient in B12 regardless of diet so I just megadose.

Many vegan foods fortify with B12 anyway so you're going to get the RDI easy with milk or meat alternatives.

It's a more humane way to eat those things. I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're asking about moral opposition: you're still owning and breeding animals and taking from them without consent. That may be a sticking point for some.

You'd have to continually get the cow pregnant to have it lactating. So what happens to the calves? It's contributing to the life and death of many other bovines to get your milk.

With your own laying hens they lay on infrequent schedules with inconsistent egg size and quality. So you will not be eating many eggs.

Kinda off note here but didn't you say a while ago that women could produce milk by squeezing the boob in a certain way or something without getting preggers in the first place?
Wouldn't that work for cows as well?

I dunno. I'm probably just rambling because it's 1am here and I'm barely awake at this point.

Cows need to be pregnant, then give birth and be nursing to produce milk. So dairy cows are artificially inseminated and kept reproducing. With factory farming they take the calf away within a few days (if its even that long) and the calf either goes on to produce milk when it's grown if it's female (though she may be bred to not be a good producer and just slaughtered for meat), and males are sent to be veal, or is sent to a feedlot and later killed. And the cow is inseminated again within 3 months.

This happens over and over and over again.

Not in anything even a fraction the quantities that dairy producers aim for if they could manage it. And typically if you do that it requires hormones, or drugs, and a great deal of manual stimulation regularly. There's no way dairy producers with thousands of cattle are going to manually stimulate bovine mammaries each day to get them sort of producing milk.

Not really, after the cow gives birth the first time it's given the hormone that makes it's body think it's still pregnant (which is where people complain about hormones in cows) so it produces milk until it dies.
Raising cattle exclusively for slaughter just isn't price efficient enough, it takes a lot of feed and time to get a cow to slaughter (I believe it's three years), so they just don't do that.

I drove by Harris Ranch a few years ago on the way to and back from LA, and I tried to be a vegetarian for a week afterwards.

I failed miserably.

I tell myself that not eating meat would not really change anything and the same animals would be slaughtered and treated horribly even if I never ate meat again.

The truth is, I am just selfish and I love steak so much I can't freaking live without it. At least when my wife was around I had the excuse that I needed to keep things that I enjoyed in my life and eating only veggies would make me seriously unhappy.

I just don't care about those poor cows enough to suffer for them. They are tasty and make me happy. I would not make them suffer myself, but I'm not going to advocate for them, I'm going to advocate for cheaper prices so I can eat more steak.

So yeah, I'm not really a very good person I guess, but I am who I am, and I love steak. That is the truth.

That's not how the dairy industry operates universally. Some opt to use rBST, others do not. Many people don't want milk from cows given growth hormones.

https://www.dairyfarmers.ca/farmers-voice/farming/milk-myths-debunked-dairy-is-scary-or-not

Even the dairy industry does admit they continue to inseminate dairy cows through their lives. Cows are cycled through pregnancy to produce milk. There's typically a dry-up period when the cows are pregnant before they give birth to the next calf. Cows can't just be milked indefinitely on hormones. Production dries up.

That's why most males are sent to be veal calves. Occasionally you will have others sent for other meat purposes. It also depends on what the dairy calves are bed with. But they are continuously bred.

The really underproducing females are killed and sold for meat as well. There's a lot of other things that will use the beef beyond human grade food.

So if you drink milk but don't support veal... well, you still support veal.
