That orange chicken was so good.

2 months now, don't really miss meat. Do miss more convenient eating. All in all it has been going well and I plan to continue. To be safe i'll get checked by a doctor sometime soon to make sure it's not creating any issues.

Sort of. I just wanted to try not consuming any animal products to see how difficult it is and how I felt about it. It is difficult in some ways and I feel good about it. I think going vegetarian is great, but the dairy and egg industries are horrible and I'd rather just be without any of it.

My diet has been primarily vegan though the odd thing will have something like eggs or milk products in it. It has been all vegetarian and almost all vegan. Before that I ate meat most days.

Being sick with the flu i tied so hard to find any kind of soup that was vegan. Almost all of them have meat. Of the ones that don't, most of them have cream, butter, or cheese.

I ended up buying vegetable broth and some basic vegetables to chop up and simmer.

I just wanted a healthier lifestyle. I legit used to eat meat every single day. I mean, I was always healthy-diet was good besides (debatably) the meat thing- and i just wanted to improve. I've last fat (i never really had much to begin with), I feel more energetic (i think) and none of my gym stats have gone down since becoming a vegan.

if you are willing to cook them yourself, dry lentils are soooo cheap. My big pot of soup only cost a few dollars to make. ($8 CAD or so) and the lentils were about 40 cents of that.

lentils are the best and as a bonus quite inexpensive

I added a couple celery ribs (chopped) and used only red lentils. If you don't have a pressure cooker, 30 minutes gently simmering on the stove is sufficient. Doesn't take too long. So darn good too

Read the second line.

There are no animal products in the ingredients, but cross contamination is possible and the way a lot of sugar is processed can involve bone char. That's true of any product that you buy with sugar.

Serious question.

Why do vegans take so much time trying to make vegan food look like meat? Like, I can get that you'd want to try and replicate the taste of meat because meat is obviously the best thing in the world, but why the look?

Does tofu in the shape of a shrimp really make it better for you?

Food is not only in taste and smell, but appearance is important and can influence or be influenced by texture. When you see something that looks like a food you have had you prime yourself for a similar experience.

Most vegans I know don't actively try and replicate meat. When you're transitioning from an omnivorous diet it can be really nice to have something that is like what you used to eat. It makes the change easier. Eventually you're not seeking out the same things as your diet has changed for a long time and what is normal is different for you.

If you're talking about the shrimp thing from earlier it wasn't tofu. Tofu is tofu. Shape it how you want I guess, I usually cube it.

But having something that has the texture of shrimp and the flavor of shrimp also made into a shrimp shape makes more sense (and feels better on the tongue) than making it a tube or square or whatever. By not shaping it correctly it makes it even more anomalous. So instead of thing this shrimp tastes a little different, it would be this shrimp doesn't even look like shrimp or feel like it in my mouth.

Like imagine if your steak was served cut into little round balls, that would be a strange experience. Could be good. Probably not what you want if you're in the mood for steak though.

But if you want the taste, texture, flavor, and shape all to be shrimp, why not just eat shrimp?

I guess I'm more curious why not eat the meat at all. I can understand the humanitarian argument, but if you were to raise the animals yourself, would it still be bad? Or is it just the taking of any animals life for your own food to be bad? Because there's certainly a case to be made that not culling the population is much worse for the animal than doing it.

Because I don't want to eat shrimp.

That's for environmental reasons (shrimp harvesting can be devastating to ocean environments). For health reasons (bottom feeders harvested near oil leaks are bad news). For humanitarian reasons (the seafood industry is rife with human slavery and trafficking). And I'd rather not consume animals as a general thing.

I have way less of an issue with people consuming their own animals that they've cared for and raised. That's much better on all fronts. The point to note is the vast majority of animal products (well over 99 per cent) available are care of factory farming. Which is absolutely atrocious for the environment, people in the industry, people near the industry headquarters, and for any animal unfortunate enough to be involved.

In the end it's still taking a life when I don't need to eat it. So I'd rather not.

Smarkil posted...

That's the thing. It's not culling the population. You cull deer that are starving. Factory farmed animals are not wild animals that you're trying to manage. They're animals artificially bred to meet consumer demand. They don't even breed on their own these days.

As people purchase less meat, fewer animals will be bred to meet shrinking demands. So that's just fewer future animals born to be raised in shitty conditions and killed at a fraction of their natural lifespan.

There's currently over ten billion animals killed each year in the US alone just for meat. That doesn't include seafood. That's a staggering number.

You would certainly have to cull the cow population. If left to their own devices, cows probably wouldn't survive at all. At least not given how much we've domesticated them. I don't think they have any sort of survival instinct left.

But that's kind of beside the point as they only exist because we made them. That said, do you have a problem with people hunting for meat then? Trophy hunting is obviously gonna be a no-go, but if I go and hunt a deer, theoretically that should be fine then right?

The deer gets to live a healthy and free life and is eventually killed in a way that's virtually a natural death for them were they to be attacked by any other predator. If anything it's the best possible outcome they could hope for aside from dying from old age.
