Cybat: Before the games came out, I tried to stay away from spoilers so I didn't look at any leaked images or anything, but I couldn't help seeing people talk about how there was a Ghost/Fire version of Marowak. "Wow", I thought, "that sounds like it would be awesome." And it is.

ctes: This is the only Alolan form where it cannot be argued that it's way cooler than its regular form. They really nailed it with this one with the staff, colors, green fire, everything. I absolutely love it outside of facing it with the prime stall team, where it's pretty tough to take care of as nothing can reliably switch in. Ghost/Fire works perfectly, even with how tragic it actually is that Marowak is a ghost type here. They basically looked at Marowak and got a perfect idea. It could have been a new Pokemon, but Marowak's design works so good with it that I don't see why. There's nothing I would change here.

StifledSilence: This more than makes up for Lavender Town's Pokemon Tower.

Ermine: Cool.

Inviso: I like Marowak, but this is an EXTREMELY cool concept that I'm glad fit the theme the way it did.

Brayze_II: thicc club

Raka_Putra: I never used it but it's still really cool!

mnkboy907: GameFreak sure screwed up on it's movepool. Literally learns its signature attack at a level before it can evolve. What.

Luster Soldier: I never really cared for regular Marowak that much, but at least this is a much better improvement over the original. The ghostly looking fire on the opposite ends of its bone looks cool. The addition of the Ghost typing to Alolan Marowak also pays homage to the Marowak ghost from the Gen I games, so that's a good way of showing that GameFreak knows the history of their Pokemon.

ctes: This Pokemon is perfect through and through. I can't possibly not award the top spot to it. First off, they make something that resembles Pikachu that is not at all Pikachu when it comes down to it. It's a completely different Pokemon. This is the only "Pikachu" clone that should've ever been made and it's not a true Pikachu clone. Instead it has some fantastic lore regarding Pikachu. How it wants to be Pikachu and literally has a decorated room full of Pikachu merchandise back from Pokemon's first heyday. The trial with Mimikyu is among the best of them. The anime introduces a fantastic Mimikyu that is jealous of Pikachu just like all others, but hates Pikachu instead. Also the lore about what Mimikyu really is below the disguise is so cool. Ghost / Fairy is a super cool unique typing that will be especially lit if they make a better physical fairy type move than Play Rough. Disguise is a fantastic ability in every way. In-game, not a single NPC gets how it works, making Mimikyu quite possibly the best Pokemon to use in the Battle Tree. It's practically a free Swords Dance all the time. Even beyond that Mimikyu is absolutely fantastic to use, with few Pokemon being more fun. It's very good competitively too because of its typing and ability. No other Pokemon resembling Pikachu is any of this, except for Pachirisu being decent in the anime. Mimikyu is so good and I absolutely love it in every way. Everything about it is perfect.

OrangeCrush: A bit of a cliche #1, but well deserved. The overall concept behind Mimikyu is really cool. I hope that Gamefreak steals the idea of having alternate forms where Mimikyu disguises itself as other Pokemon like the Eeveelutions. Additionally, Mimikyu is a lot of fun to use in battle, especially the Battle Tree. Disguise makes setting up a Swords Dance so easy as well as letting you scout your opponent for free.

Drakeryn: "Fool. The art of rhetoric is mine. You may speak in all caps and swear on graves, but I have art. Oh, and I weaved such a delicate basket of lies and deceit." - Lopen

swordz9: The concept for this Pokemon is incredible and why it's my favorite of the generation.

Cybat: The flavor for this guy is really endearing but on top of that it has a fun typing with a solid stat spread and great ability. What's not to love?

Raka_Putra: Aww. Not only is its concept so cute and tragic that makes me wanna protecc it, but It's pretty neat to use in battle. Probably not the strongest, but that free Substitute is cool stuff.

Inviso: Prior to this generation, I didn't have a single Ghost-type in my overall top 25. Thanks to Mimikyu (and one other), I have two. The concept behind this Pokemon is adorable, the design is adorable, and it's actually USEFUL in combat with its ability. I love that Mimikyu exists, I really do. Best Pika-clone ever.

pyresword: Disguise is a really fun ability, and the Pokemon itself is oddly offputting yet adorable.

mnkboy907: It's cool and all but there's a lot better so it's going to be a little disappointing when this thing ends up #1 or 2.

StifledSilence: Normally Pikachu clones are hit or miss, but this was a nice creepy take on the clone formula.

XIII: Great, meta story for a Pokemon. I enjoyed it.

Luster Soldier: When this was first revealed, I initially thought it would receive some hate for being an actual Pikachu knockoff (unlike the standard Pikachu clones we get each generation), with the potential for some people to point towards Mimikyu as an example of the later generations having unoriginal Pokemon designs. Pokemon like Emolga and Dedenne are different enough from Pikachu itself to avoid getting targeted by people looking to scapegoat them as unoriginal Pokemon designs. However, Mimikyu is far more of a Pikachu knockoff than the standard Pikachu clones we get every generation since Gen III. So I was surprised that Mimikyu turned out to receive a lot of support from other people. It's also a cute Pokemon, which I thought might have hampered its chances of being well-liked since cute Pokemon usually get hated on with relatively few exceptions. It's cute, but not super cute, which appeared to save it from the hate that most cute Pokemon suffer from. Despite everything I've said up to this point, I don't want people being left with the impression that I somehow hate Mimikyu (totally not true).

PrinceKaro: The pokemon world is full of puns, but most people don’t realize that this is one too (Mimikyu = mimic you)

Brayze_II: I warmed up to this little shit a lot when I saw his pikachu creep room

Paratroopa1: there's a strange sort of irony in the fact that this guy wants to be popular so he dresses up as pikachu and it actually fucking WORKED because everyone loves mimikyu now. what kind of message does that send to our kids? copy everything your idol does and also have a plan to murder and replace them and you too will be loved by everyone? look I'm just saying there are some weird moral messages here

Ermine: "Hey guys, I think we've done too many Pikachu clones! We even have one in this fucking generation as well. Well let's see, instead of a Pika clone, let's make a ghost thingy that WISHES it was Pikachu. Dear god, someone get this man a raise." No. I am god damn sick and tired of anything Pikachu related and this ticks me off even more because they are self aware that Pikachu is shoved down everyone's throats to the point they made an acutal Pokemon that WISHES he was Pikachu. I can't believe there was a time I actually liked Pikachu. I honestly wouldn't be surprised (no joke) if half of the next generation of Pokemon were Pikachu related because OMG PIKACHU SELLS! EVERYONE LOVES PIKACHU! Fuck me.

Inviso: By the end of Gen VI, the highest Grass-type in my overall ranking was Bulbasaur, coming in just inside the top fifty. I don't much care for Grass Pokemon, you see. They're either pretty and weak, or ugly and weak, or ugly and easily surpassed by either the Fire or Water starter for any given generation. But then Rowlet came along. Sure, I'm inherently biased in favor of Litten because fire kitty, but Rowlet turned my head (180 degrees, 'cause owl.) Then the final evos got leaked and Decidueye turned out to be a total badass. Incineroar and Primarina still looked good to me (seriously, great starter trio), but they couldn't compare to an owl using its wing as a bow to fire feather arrows. That's AWESOME. AND it would give us a Grass/Flying-type that I could actually enjoy (screw you Tropius/Jumpluff). But then...Grass/Ghost. My heart sank and I was PISSED. Because not only did this remove my hopes of a Grass/Flying-type, but it also made it so I couldn't use Decidueye and Mimikyu on the same team. That sucked. But still, I pushed forward and picked Rowlet, and I'm SO glad I did. Decidueye's design is amazing (best Grass-type, as I've stated), its unique move is awesome, and it's got JUST the right talents to be useful competitively, with some bulk to keep from being a glass cannon. It's a top ten Pokemon overall, and it's definitely the best of this generation.

ctes: Very badass Pokemon. It has such a cool design and gimmick with the bow. Basically a forest elf. The ghost type is kinda unnecessary, as keeping flying would've worked just fine, but it's no issue. Any of flying, ghost and dark would've worked.

StifledSilence: Assassin's Creed Owl was almost my first choice, but I couldn't say no to Wrestler Kitty.

Ermine: Badass Archer Owl. Thank god he turned out amazing considering how Popplio's line was ruined for me.

Cybat: Some minor things about his appearance keep him from reaching the top but this is still a really cool starter. Ghost Pokemon in general fared well this gen.

profDEADPOOL: Owliver Queen best starter family

Raka_Putra: The coolest final evo of the starter by a mile. I was caught offguard by its typing, I thought it'd be Grass/Flying. Cool stuff.

MrSmartGuy: Thinking emoji

XIII: Looks great. Nearly picked it, but Incineroar is just so much better.

Luster Soldier: The Ghost typing was an unexpected surprise when Decidueye got revealed since we took it for granted that Rowlet/Dartrix would retain the secondary Flying typing since it started out with a dual typing in the first stage. Dual typed Pokemon rarely ever see their secondary type change upon evolving, with very few exceptions outside of Mega Evolutions. Had it not been for the reveal of Primarina, I would have been using this Pokemon instead for my Sun/Moon playthrough. I was originally on the Rowlet train before defecting much later. Thanks to Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, I can pick Rowlet in my playthrough of that game.

I don't have a problem with my in-game team having 2 or more Pokemon that share a single typing. I used 3 Fairy types in my playthrough, although they were all dual typed Pokemon where all 3 of them had different primary typings.

Decidueye is a badass and deserving winner.

But, man do I adore Mimikyu. It has everything going for it. A really great story and design, great typing, usefulness in battle. It manages to be cute and creepy and cool all at once. Easily a top ten Pokemon for me.

Mimikyu is much less a Pikachu clone than Togedemaru and every other Pokemon made that resembles Pikachu in any way. To answer Luster (and others), I would definitely target Emolga and Dedenne for being uoriginal before Mimikyu. There's actually a point to it for once. Mimikyu is among the most original ideas of the generation. Look past the cover and it's a completely different Pokemon.
