I never had a generic name for those things.
If it's coke, I call it "a can of coke" or "a bottle of coke" if it's in a plastic bottle. If it's pepsi I say pepsi, if it's 7up I call it 7up. If I'm talking in general I might say "soft drinks" but only in the context of saying something like "soft drinks are bad for you if you drink too much" or something, but I would never say "I'm going to buy a soft drink" .... Pepsi has never been used a generic term, it's very specific. Coke isn't. Coca Cola is specific in the way Pepsi is.

Calling it Coke is just a gross southern thing. It only extends to Coca cola and Pepsi though. I've never seen it used to describe Sprite or anything else.

I think the "Coke" term is big in Georgia, where the world HQ is for Coca-Cola. I have heard people use it once in awhile in the deeper south as a general term for what I call "pop."
