I never had a generic name for those things.

If it's coke, I call it "a can of coke" or "a bottle of coke" if it's in a plastic bottle. If it's pepsi I say pepsi, if it's 7up I call it 7up.

If I'm talking in general I might say "soft drinks" but only in the context of saying something like "soft drinks are bad for you if you drink too much" or something, but I would never say "I'm going to buy a soft drink" .... I just say what it is

Because the term Coke to mean carbonated beverage is common in some areas. Pepsi is not.

I heard about it but never actually saw anyone do that. Where is this?

Pepsi has never been used a generic term, it's very specific. Coke isn't. Coca Cola is specific in the way Pepsi is.

Calling it Coke is just a gross southern thing. It only extends to Coca cola and Pepsi though. I've never seen it used to describe Sprite or anything else.

...and again here is a map showing the usage...it is probably a generational thing as are many of the other words used in this study.

This is the one that got me on that lists of dialect and wording mapping is caught and cot..I pronounce them differently.
