ugh... there comes an age where having a roommate is not enjoyable.

A roommate is never enjoyable.

I have never had a roommate in my life, and I am 34 years old. I have pretty much lived alone for the last 12 years of my life. I feel sorry for the poor woman who I trick into marrying me.

Do you have a solid amount of savings?

If I let you look at a mortgage file you'd probably be singing a different tune

yeah roommate/flatmate is a bit iffy when you're a bit older yourself. It's much harder to adjust, I mean I've only lived alone for a year and a change (my then gf didn't even want to consider moving in with me) and I absolutely dread the notion of ever moving back to my mom's place or have someone else I don't get to f*** in my personal space for more than a few hours

Sorry but you can't just say that and then not tell the story. That's just common courtesy.

It's like being that person who posts "send thoughts and prayers!" without anything else, just fishing for someone to comment and ask what's wrong.

I'll keep it as short as possible:

I had two roommates about 2 years ago. I was the landlord (look after one of my parents houses, getting to stay there for free was a perk). One roommate was a girl from China. The other was a local guy starting at university. He rarely spoke, just would go to his room and stay there.

He started exhibiting strange behaviours. One morning I go to the kitchen to find him sitting in the dining room wearing nothing but his underwear, completely wet, staring at the wall. When I ask him what he's doing, he turns to me, completely blank look on his face, and mutters "I dunno", and then stumbles back to his room where he goes back to bed.

I confronted him about it later that day, claims he was "sleep walking". My bullshit detector is going through the roof and I threatened eviction if it happened again.

A month later, about 2:00am I wake up to a loud banging noise on my bedroom door, and it was, of course, caused by him, again standing wearing only his underwear (this time he wasn't soaking wet). I ask him what the hell he's doing, he says in a monotone blank voice "nothing". He stumbles to his room again and I see the light go out. I try to go back to bed, thinking "I'll deal with this in the morning", but then I immediately hear a SMASH. I run to his room, open the door, and see that he's ripped off the sliding mirror panel door from his closet, and smashed it over his bedframe. This has caused mirror shards to scatter everywhere, and he is bleeding profusely. He begins screaming in a rampage, I get the fuck out of the room and call the police. Meanwhile, he's dragged his broken mirror door out, mirror shards scattering everywhere, and blood all over the carpet.

Police finally arrive, and they remove him. I was able to evict him on the spot. Found out a week later that his dad is a police officer in a different city, and in order to save his own reputation, he has offered to pay 3 months rent plus the full cost of repairing the damaged room.

After this wound down, the Chinese girl began going insane. This event gave her PTSD or some shit and she started becoming a paranoid wreck. She threatened to sue me if I didn't allow her to put bolt locks on her doors. I told her the law didn't work that way, but she wouldn't have any of it. I ended up evicting her, too.

tl;dr: I had a roommate that got high af on some fucked up shit and destroyed my place. My other roommate got shell shock from that and also went insane.

I live in MA. You can find a decent 1BR apartment for well under $1K a month. Might have a longer commute to work, but you should try looking outside your immediate area.

And this is why, if I ever chose to have a roommate, it would be with friends or family members that I trust. Not people who I don't know who the hell they are.

That's no guarantee you won't end up in a shitty living situation. I roomed with my best friend, and he's a great guy but and absolutely shitty roommate. Was late with utility payments, never did dishes, his bedroom was a fucking sty (entirely none of my business EXCEPT for when the odor would creep out and the bugs would creep in), would play pranks when I had a girl over. When I say play pranks, I'm talking about barging into my room while I was mid-coitus and asking if he can borrow one of my GameCube games, then pretending he didn't know we were banging and apologize while stifling his laughter. You know, pranks.

I've known people in similar situations. You may think you know someone, even a close relative, really well until you're living with them and you're sharing adult responsibilities with them.

This.

In four years of college, I've seen at least a dozen people go from being friends --> roommates --> not speaking.

You can be best friends with someone and hang out with them for 8 hours a day, all day every day, and get along absolutely swimmingly. In most cases, you won't see their worst roommate traits, so you think, okay, let's move in since we get along so well! Then, you finally see how they take hour long showers and have really loud sex all the time and never wash their dishes and shit. And then the friendship ends when that shit boils over and the attacks start getting personal.
