Went through orientation the past two days and I'm enrolled for classes.

But what I really mean is congrats, college can be fun.

Congrats. Remember to follow the two very easy rules (Attend class, Do the homework) and you'll have absolutely no trouble with passing your classes.

I'm just experiencing that for myself now. I was always the babu of this board and... well, I still am, but now I'm the college babu

I'm going into business, and I do have good interest in it. What I REALLY want to do with my life is perform and record music, but my kind of music isn't something that a college teaches (at least not any college that I can afford to go to and isn't halfway across the country). So I'm quite alright with taking my second interest and turning it into a professional career if my music never turns into anything.

Just for the record, UNT has one of the top rated music schools in the country, especially if you're interested in Jazz. Pretty sure Denton can't possibly be more than a 90 minute drive from whichever part of DFW you are/were in, too.

Though just between you and me, if you're still in the Dallas area you're probably at a pretty solid school for a business program. Not a top-tier one by any means, but definitely solid =)

Edit: Whoops, misread your post and missed that you were talking about specific styles of music. Point about UNT's program being legitimately top-tier still stands, but it's less meaningful to you probably.

You could've gone to the Eastman School of Music. Nobody can afford to go to it and it's halfway across the country, but I'd at least be able to torment you.

Remember that the vast majority of useful value you get out of college is extracurricular and not required stuff.

Literally 100% of your class will do the required stuff. But what % will do your combination of extra stuff? That's the only way to stand out.

Yeah, UNT is absolutely amazing for orchestral music and marching band and choir as far as I know. I'm a blues musician. I play guitar and drums and bass, and my songwriting and style probably isn't what they would teach (nor would they want tbh).

I'm at UT Arlington. Wanted to go to SMU or UT (Austin), but $$$. Got mad scholarships to SMU (over $35k), but when the school costs $70k a year and you gotta live on campus the first two years... scholarships hardly matter unless they're full tuition/full ride. And of course Austin doesn't give money hardly at all.

I'm gonna be trying to join the on-campus business leadership program and the honors college, alongside possibly a few others. Gotta find a way to start networking somehow!

Use your professor's office hours if you need extra help.
If you're not a strong writer, or you find out you're not as strong as you were led to believe, utilize whatever kind of writing center or writing tutoring your school has. Also, utilize tutors in general. Some schools offer them free for first semester freshman.
Join clubs. Be part of causes you believe in. Be open minded.

My grade average went up an entire letter from my first two years to my final two years of university, and the only thing I did different over that time was that I actually went to all my classes, so I second "go to class".

Even in courses where they don't mark you on participation/attendance and it seems like there's no reason to be there, just go. It doesn't seem like it'll matter, but it does.

Also congrats!

Yeah, I figured you were either at Arlington or Dallas. Both have pretty solid business schools, and you wouldn't have gone wrong with either. I really can't recommend SMU to anybody unless they're part of the rich, connected families and they really, really want the name prestige. I say this as somebody who has a couple friends currently attending that university.

Also Jazz and Blues are totally close enough that you would fit in at UNT if you tried imo. But you made the 'safe' choice for sure.

Yeah well I don't ever have the time to just sit on a game and play all day anymore! I'm either up at my job (which btw is fucking AWESOME, I get to play guitar for 2 hours a day and make some nice money out of it) or I'm hanging out with fri- okay I don't really hang out with friends that much

But sometimes I just want to play smash or something and I don't get trophies by playing For Glory :/
