I live in an urban area, and literally the only place I ever drive to is the grocery store. I am within walking distance of everything else. My car battery died again today because I dont drive enough, so I just took Lyft. A couple round trips to the grocery store is cheaper than paying car insurance. Having a car just seems pointless.

If you live in an urban area and don't go far, yeah cars are pretty useless.

I've never used on of those car services, but wouldn't public transport be noticeably cheaper than them? Nothing wrong with riding the bus.

I loath public transit. Uber is usually only like $5-$10 each way for short trips anyway.

How much does uber cost really? I mean, this could be an option for me.

I have 2 cars, and my car insurance is around 50$ a month. I also spend a good, oh 10-15$ a month on gas (possibly less now). I rarely go out except to shop.

So if I could Uber for like 6$ to the store and 6$ back......it would cost about as much as having the groceries delievered, but I would get to use the better deals and pick my own food.

If it's $10 each way though, it's just not worth it, and I always figured there was something like a $10 minimum.

So how much does it cost you to Uber?

It's awful for grocery shopping. I've done it many times and would like to never do it again.

Depends on distance, but my round-trip fare to get groceries today was $8.50.

Its not great, but it is hard to justify paying to maintain a car solely for that purpose.

It's a pretty solid plan in a city. Also if you end up needing to drive somewhere hours away you can always rent a car.

I'd say go for it. It would kinda suck if you want to go off somewhere for fun though, or go visit a distant relative. Do you have any family or close friends nearby?

Not really. When I travel, I already just take Uber to the airport.

cars are a very big expense. which is a big reason i don't want one. feels like a luxury item to me that i just don't have a need for. if you live in a city with lots of public transit like me then you really don't need a car anyway.

so hey if it's similar for you i say go for it :D but having your own car DOES make some things easier. if you can easily afford the expense then it's totally worth having.

TBH this is kinda a revelation for me, I mean, I never even considered not having a car. I hate driving, I do it cause I have to, but it's always stressfull now adays.

And I pay money every month to be able to drive, even outside of the cost of actually driving.

If you can really do a round trip shopping for $10 or so, I mean that is once trip a week total, and maybe another trip for some other stuff once a month at this point. $50 a month is what I pay already for insurance....and I wouldn't have to worry about regestiring the stupid thing (which is $150 here in WA) etc.

I mean, when you factor in gas as well, and parking in some places, I could probably spend more like $20-30 a week on uber driving and still break even.

I am so going to look into this, thanks.

Meh, cars are more of a pain than anything. Since I never drive it, the battery is dead, and now I have to call Amex and have them send someone to jump it for the second time in a couple months.

Not really. When I travel, I already just take Uber to the airport.

Well maybe a better question is, where do you live?

In my case, I live near Albany GA, which has one airport and it only goes to Atlanta. If i wanted to go to Atlanta, I could do so in under 4 hours one one tank of gas, or I could spend nearly $200 to fly there. Another scenario is if I want to go to my favorite theme park in Valdosta. I can drive there and back easily on one tank of gas and 3 hours round trip, if I were to fly there, I would have to go to the Albany airport, fly to Atlanta, get on another plane to Valdosta and then do the same to go back home. That ticket alone is almost $400. So it's just completely unreasonable for me to not have a car.

But I could see it being reasonable if I lived in Atlanta. So if you live in a big city like that I'd say go for it, otherwise, it migh be better to have the option to travel by yourself.

Public transit is cheaper for sure, but the annoying thing about that is that sometimes you end up having to deal with really weird and sketchy people on the bus or subway. I mean I'm used to that since I live in Chicago, but I see why others may not want to deal with that.

I'd probably use Uber/Lyft more often, if I made more money. Sometimes I am tempted to use ridesharing over taking a city or suburban bus, if I have enough money in my account. Too often I don't, only because my bank account has less money in it than I prefer. And I totally understand for some people, that it's better for them to not own a car if they can walk to a lot of things nearby, and rarely ever have to drive to places. Of course it's often expensive to rent a car(and moreso than even using Uber/Lyft to go somewhere), so that's a factor to consider if one is debating giving up their car. I do like Uber X(that mode of Uber) a lot, and I'm sure I will try Lyft out soon enough.
